LAKELAND - Gene Byron Doke, 84, was taken to Heaven to be with our Lord on March 7, 2013, due to heart failure. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 3, 1929, in Fort Meade, Florida.
Gene was discharged from the United States Marines as a Sergeant after serving from March 1946 to March 1949. He served in the United States Marine Reserves until December 1951. He was then re-called into service and attended OCS training for the United States Army and served with the rank of Lieutenant in Korea in the Korean War and was discharged in 1954.
He attended Stetson University where he received his Bachelor's Degree and the University of Florida for his graduate studies. He was a member of St. Stephens's Episcopal Church.
Gene is survived by his wife, Launa B. Doke; daughters, Maris (Chris) Clark, Amy (Brian) Bartholomew, Candy Concowich and Amanda (Kevin) Wolfe; sons, Ed (Barbara) Norris; grandchildren, Rebecca Scholten, Patrick Norris, Kelly Jones, Bailey Bartholomew, Chase Norris, Bo Bartholomew, Marisa Clark and Mariah Clark; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Wolfe and Ty Scholten.
He was preceded in death by his son, Allen Norris.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 2 p.m., at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1820 E. CR 540A, Lakeland, FL.
