PLANT CITY - Rev. Bennie W. Baker, age 83, was born in Oxford, FL and went home to be with the Lord due to respiratory failure on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Melech Hospice Home in Tampa.
He went to Cork Elementary in Plant City and Plant City High School, graduating in 1949.
He was the pastor of several Southern Baptist Churches in Florida. Also he was the chaplain for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Dept. as an employee and a volunteer for 28 years. In addition, he ministered at the food pantry for Bethany Baptist Church of Plant City. These ministries served as pathways for him to witness to others and share the Good News of Jesus to everyone he came in contact with.
Preceding him in death were his father, George W. Baker, mother Ida Gerdes Baker and 9 siblings. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Baker, his children Becky Baker Mullis (husband Terry) of Lakeland, Krista Baker Beauchamp (husband Johnnie) of Plant City, a son Larry Elvin Baker (wife Shannon) of Lakeland, sister Anna Crenshaw of Wildwood and Lottie Connell of Jacksonville, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was a lifelong Florida Gator fan.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church in Plant City. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
