LAKELAND - John J. Dougherty, Jr. "Coach Doc", 65, of Lakeland passed away on March 28, 2013, due to heart failure.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he moved to Gainesville, FL as a child. He graduated from the Univ. of Florida with a BA in Education and was a Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam. He retired from the Polk County School System after 38 years as a High School Teacher and Coach. He taught at Santa Fe Catholic, Mulberry, Kathleen, and George Jenkins High Schools. He was head of the Drivers' Education Program for the county school system for 17 years. He was a member of Kiwanis and served as a Key Club Advisor. He enjoyed fishing, Gator sports, and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, Jason; daughter, Michelle Dougherty Oliver, both of Lakeland; four brothers, Ricky, Michael, Billy, and Robbie; two sisters, Linda Atchinson and Donna Van Ryzin; and four grandchildren, Taylor, Madison, Justin, and Joey.
Services for Coach will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 5th at Highlands Park Church-Nazarene, 4777 Lakeland Highlands Road, 33813. Military Honors will follow at 1:30 PM at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
