LAKELAND - Richard Irwin Dickter, age 69, passed away May 20, 2013, from colon cancer.
Richard Irwin Dickter, Major U.S. Army, Retired, was born in New York City on August 27, 1943 to Milton S. Dickter and Ethel Avidon Dickter. He moved to Lakeland in 1952 where he attended Cleveland Court Elementary, Southwest Junior High School and graduated from Lakeland Senior High School in 1962. After graduation Richard served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962 to 1966 and was discharged as a sergeant. Upon discharge he enrolled and graduated from Polk Junior College followed by Florida State University and finally attending and graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice Education and Administration. While attending Eastern University, Richard became involved with the Army R.O.T.C. and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps in 1973. Between the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army (both active and reserves) he served 36 years until retirement in August of 2003. Upon his retirement Richard helped found and became a partner in Big Dicks' Super Lube. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, AmVets, American Legion Post #4, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #46, Military Officer's Association of America (MOAA) VISTE and was a founding member of Polk County Caregivers Association.
Richard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Roy Nichols, his granddaughter Kenzie Nichols, all of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. He is also survived by his sister Linda Nachinoff of Brookline, Mass., niece Karin Nachinoff, cousin Danny Leonard of San Diego, California as well as many, many friends.
Richard had requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to VISTE- 1232 E. Magnolia Street, Lakeland,Fl. 33801 or Good Shepherd Hospice-105 Arneson Ave, Auburndale, Fl. 33823. Funeral services will be held Friday May 24, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Seigler Funeral Home-Chapel, Hwy. 60 E. Mulberry, Fl. Condolences may be sent to the family @
