LAKELAND - Walter Alton Batts, Jr., 86, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 as a result of natural causes.
Mr. Batts was born November 13, 1926 in Wilson, NC to Walter Alton Batts, Sr. and Charity Louise High Batts. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army Air Corps where he served in the European Theater during World War II. Mr. Batts was a salesman in the oil industry. He was employed by Humble Oil for 20 years and Fleetwing for over 35 years until his retirement in 2010.
Mr. Batts was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, LouRee Batts; wife of 37 years, Mary Thad Batts; and brother, David Batts. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Jo Eldredge, Beth Jones and Meg Wallace and her husband, Chris; sisters, Dorothy Batts Edwards and Elaine Batts Percival and her husband, Bryce; 5 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Mr. Batts' family will receive friends Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 1-2pm at Lakeland Funeral Home at 2125 South Bartow Highway in Lakeland. A celebration of Mr. Batts' life will be conducted at 2pm with Pastor Mary Beth Packard officiating. Interment, with military honors performed by the United States Air Force Honor Guard, will follow at Lakeland Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made, in Mr. Batts' memory, to VISTE or the charitable organization of your choice.
