LAKELAND - Hugh Bill Callahan, 86 passed away peacefully at Lakeland Regional Medical Center with family by his side on Friday May 24th, 2013. A day after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he suffered a bleed on the brain, from which he never recovered.
Bill was born in Lakeland on September 18th, 1926 to Dr. Hugh Boyd and Antonette Snow Callahan.
During his junior year in high school, Bill enlisted in the Navy. He served his country honorably and at the end of World War Il, he returned to Lakeland and began his studies of Architecture and Design at Florida Southern College. Bill was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and participated in numerous extracurricular activities.
While attending College he made many acquaintances whom would remain lifelong friends. Undoubtedly, the most significant was the woman he would marry in 1951 and remain devoted to for just over 60 years, Lois Marguerite Futch.
Bill opened and operated Imperial Studios, a successful Interior Design business of almost 40 years. He was a longtime member of the Sertoma Club and later the Kiwanis Club. He and his wife shared a myriad of interests including The Lakeland Symphony, Alumni events at Florida Southern College, summer vacations at Ponce Inlet, the Carolina Mountains and weekends at the Lakeland Yacht Club. Both were active members of Saint David's Episcopal and later Saint Stephen's Episcopal church. Bill enjoyed most, the time spent with his wife and their numerous friends.
Bill is survived by his son Les Callahan.
A private memorial service was held a Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church on Wednesday June 12, 2013.
Bill was a kind, compassionate and patient man. His ability to see the positive in all circumstances and individuals endeared him a life full of vibrancy, happiness, and content. God set the stars to give light to the world; one of those stars was Bill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Stephen's Memorial Garden, 1820 E County Road 540 A Lakeland.
