WINTER HAVEN - George G. Smith Sr., age 95, a former Munnsville and Okeechobee resident passed away late Monday evening October 28, 2013 at the VA Foster Care Facility of Lakeland, FL, due to heart failure.
He was born on December 29, 1917 in Osceola, New York a son of the late Thomas H. and Jane (McElroy) Smith and was a graduate of Vernon High School Class of 1937.
On January 28, 1942 George enlisted with the United States Marine Corp where he served with the 2nd Battalion 23rd Marine 4th Division who served in the Battle on Iwo Jima and was honorably discharged on November 16, 1945.
George and Dorothy N. Newnam were united in marriage on January 14, 1944 in Washing, D.C. and shared a loving union of nearly forty-five years together until Dorothy's death on November 26, 1988.
Prior to his retirement on January 31, 1979 George was employed for over twenty-five years as a truck driver for the Dairylea Co. of Vernon.
Beginning in 1983 George and his wife spent their summers at Greene Acres Mobile Terrace in Munnsville and their winters in Okeechobee, FL.
He formerly attended Holy Family Church of Vernon and Sacred Heart Church of Okeechobee. He was a past member of The Teamster Union, Dairylea Local 182 of Utica.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn (Rick) Conrad of Winter Haven, FL, one son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. (Elna) Smith of Castle Rock, Colorado, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife, one daughter Joan Szarowicz in 1993, five sisters and five brothers.
Family and friends called on Friday November 1, 2013 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon. Mr. Smith's funeral service of Christian Burial was held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Peterboro Street, Vernon. Burial with military honors followed in St. Helena's Cemetery, Oneida, NY.
