ESKENAZI, 86

LAKELAND - Dr.
Albert Eskenazi, 86, of Lakeland, Florida died Saturday, December 14, 2013, of pneumonia after a brief stay at LRMC.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Patricia Eskenazi, and brother Jack Eskenazi.
He is survived by his wife Jane Eskenazi, sister Lorraine Kurland, two sons Steven (Robbie) of Winter Haven; Daniel Eskenazi (Lisa) of Chapel Hill, NC, and their daughters Sophia and Patricia; two step-sons David and John Cox of Lakeland, John's daughter Elizabeth Cox, and nieces and nephews.
Dr. Eskenazi was born on July 3, 1927 in Miami, Florida to Victor and Marie Eskenazi. He graduated from Miami High School and enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. After WWII he entered college earning his Bachelor's degree from Emory University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Houston. While interning at the Wichita Guidance Center he met Patricia Fink and they married in 1957.
That year he came to the Polk County Mental Health Center, now Peace River Center, where he served for over 20 years including several as director. He then worked for over 25 years in private practice. He wrote a weekly psychology column in The Ledger for 13 years.
After retiring in 2006 he enjoyed traveling with Jane, volunteering with organizations such as Guardian ad Litem, and spending time with family. In recent years he enjoyed attending B'nai B'rith and the Senior Center Broadway Series.
He was active in numerous professional and civic organizations and a long time active member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland where he attended regularly until as recently as two weeks ago.
Dr. Eskenazi made a whole body donation for medical research , hoping that his life as a scientist would be continued in that research.
He and his family were thankful for the help of many who assisted in his care for much of the past 3 years, especially Wanda Lassiter, Cheryl Bennett, Mary Chestnut, Orpah Hall, and Chuck Sanders.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the . A memorial service will be held at 10AM on Saturday December 28th at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland.
