PEORIA, IL - Russell J. Buster, Jr., 90, born 04/09/23 to Lillian (Woertz) and Russell J. Buster, Sr. of Peoria, Illinois, died 12/10/13 of natural causes at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Florida.
Russ is survived by his wife, Beth Herbst; brother, William (Marilyn) Buster; daugther Karen (Mike) Zichterman; son, Jay (Hyeawon Chae); five grandchildren, Anna (Johnathan) Remis, James Zichterman and Daniel Zichterman, Grant Buster and Max Buster; and two great-grandsons, Jude and Adam Remis.
Russ was a lifelong reader, writer and scholar. He loved sailing, traveling, running and life, especially in his later years with his new buddies, Smokey and Bandit. He graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, earned four Bronze Battle Star Medals in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater (1943-1945), and continued graduate studies at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois.
After retiring from the family owned and operated business, Buster and Company, he and his wife sailed down the river system from Peoria to their home port of Marathon, Florida Keys from which they sailed the Eastern seaboard and the Carribean aboard their sailing vessel, Once Around, aptly named by Russ for his philosophy of life: You go once around in life, live it and be happy now.
Memorial services will be announced by invitation at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ASPCA, Lake Region Audubon Society and/or the Lions Club of Florida and the Bahamas.
