JOHN McWHORTER Obituary

JOHN CALVIN (JACK) McWHORTER JR. John Calvin (Jack) McWhorter, Jr. died on 8 October 2014. He was born 28 April 1926 in Mercedes, Texas but grew up in Edinburg, Texas. Valedictorian of his high school class, he attended Texas A&M University before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1943. He graduated with the Class of 1946 as a second lieutenant in the US Army Quartermaster Corps. His thirty years of active duty included eleven years overseas with service in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served in a research and development unit participating in the nuclear tests at Eniwetok and the Nevada Test Site and later taught Engineering Mechanics at West Point. He is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (honor graduate of his class) and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, DC. He served as Director, Transportation and Services, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, Department of the Army and later as Deputy J-4 for Strategic Mobility, Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired in 1976 as a Major General. He became the ex officio historian of the USMA Class of 1946 through his efforts started in 1987 to write and have published in the West Point magazine, Assembly, memorial articles depicting the life and careers of his deceased classmates. At the time of his death, he had written 216 such materials. He also authored two books on the Class of 1946. The first, published in 1993, "USMA, Class of 1946, A Chronicle of Duty-Honor-Country" and the second published in 1996, "West Point Revisited, Reminiscences of the Class of 1946, 50 years later". As a result of his efforts, the Class of 1946 is reputed to be one of the best documented classes in West Point history. General McWhorter is survived by his wife, Mildred; (Millie), son, John C. III; wife Otti, daughters, Cynthia Wilson husband Chuck, Beth Aaron husband Billy, and Leslie Freshour; grandchildren, Lisa Beeville, Christopher Power wife Lisa, Jamie Flores husband Jason, Vanessa Cook husband Emory, Tiffany Arnold, Nathan Howard, Michael McWhorter and seven Great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Army Residence Community at 2:00 p.m. on 15 October 2014. Rev. Ermine Todd will officiate. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
