FRED S. SIMMONS Jr.(1925 - 2013)

FRED S. SIMMONS JR. McALLEN - Fred S. Simmons Jr., age 87, passed away September 16, 2013 in McAllen. He was born in Edinburg, TX on December 24, 1925 to Fred S. Simmons Sr. and Concepcion Daugherty Simmons. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Nellie Daugherty Simmons, wife, Mary Simmons, sisters: Frances Simmons Ely & Dorris Simmons Lisbony, brothers: James Simmons, Herbert Simmons, Donald Simmons & Nolan Simmons and by a niece, Doris Jean Ely Bacon. He leaves behind two sisters: Irene Simmons Sparks & Henrietta Simmons, three brothers: Howard Simmons, Walter Simmons & Daniel Simmons. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins including: Billy Joe Ely, Fred Ely, Deborah Ely Little, Catherine Lisbony Jenkins & Connie Ely Vann. Fred joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Atlantic Theater as a machinist mate on the USS GENERAL A.E. Anderson AP-111 – troop transport, which carried troops and returned with wounded soldiers. During the Korean Conflict, Fred served on the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD823) Gearing-Class Destroyer. Upon leaving the Navy in 1956, Fred joined the Electric Boat Company, a division of General Dynamics, where he tested the engines on the newly constructed nuclear submarines. He worked at Electric Boat Co. for 30+ years and was in charge of engine Sea-Trials. He returned to the Valley in the early 1990's to be closer to his Family. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Skinner-Silva Funeral Home on West Sam Houston in Pharr.
