JOHN SINGLETERRY SR. WESLACO - John Singleterry, 89, passed away July 11, 2013 at his residence in Weslaco. He was born in Donna, TX on August 28, 1923 to Dan Singleterry Sr. and Norberta Mendoza. He met and married the love of his life, Estefana "Fannie" De Leon in 1942, who preceded him in death on December 5, 2012. John was a veteran of WWII where he served his country in the U.S. Army. He was past member of the Weslaco Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Weslaco Chamber of Commerce and by profession he was a farmer and grocer. He also served in the capacity of the police commission for the City of Weslaco as well as Mayor Pro-Term from the mid 1950's to the 1960's. After farming, he started a third career as bailiff and court interpreter for the Hidalgo County Courthouse until his retirement. Our family wishes to personally thank his caregivers, Nereida "Neddy" Garcia and her mother, Flor Estela Garcia who were most helpful and kind through this most trying time. Dad we will always remember you as the most caring, loving and selfless man who was always there for his family and loved God. He is survived by his children, John Singleterry Jr. and wife, Olga, Beatrice Castillo-Equinones and husband, Joseph and Diana Pena and husband, Niceforo; his sister, Pilar Hernandez and husband, Alfredo; brother, Daniel "Lee" Singleterry and wife, Anita; and sister-in-law, Macrina Singleterry. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 15, 2013 from 5pm to 9pm with a rosary at 7pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 10am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco, with Father Ruben Delgado officiating the service. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Mercedes. Serving as pallbearers will be Jaime Castillo, Bobby Rodriguez, Romel Castillo, Bradley Castillo, Bryce De Shazo and Cory Rodriguez. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Lee Singleterry. Jovan Castillo and Sammy Rodriguez. Military gravesite rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #7473 of Elsa. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
