PATRICIA RAE BARRETT(1949 - 2014)

PATRICIA RAE BARRETT 1949-2014 Patricia Rae Barrett (Patty) passed away of natural causes Sunday, 16 February 2014, at her home in Edinburg, Texas. Patty was born in 1949 to Radford James and Bertha Lorene Bastion Barrett in Amarillo, Texas, and graduated from Amarillo Tascosa High School. Afterwards, she attended West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) where she earned a B. A. in English. Shortly after graduating from college, Patty moved to the Rio Grande Valley, taking a position teaching English at McAllen High School, where she helped mold students for 32 years. During that time, she also earned an M.A. in English from Pan American University (now the University of Texas-Pan American), coached state qualifiers and a state champion in UIL Literary Criticism, chaired the English Department, taught at South Texas College, and played viola with the Valley Symphony Orchestra. After retiring, she sang with the Valley Symphony Chorale; sang in the choir and sat on the board of McAllen's First Christian Church DOC, McAllen, serving three terms as chair; and occasionally did work for IDEA Public Schools, Sylvan Learning Systems, and Waugh's Nursery. Patty was a passionate animal rescuer, and her home housed various beneficiaries of her sympathy for abandoned and/or abused pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and a cockatiel. In addition, she was an avid gardener and especially favored roses, which she grew and shared in abundance. As a Texas AgriLife Extension Service Master Gardener, she made presentations for various organizations on the selection, planting, and care of roses. Those preceding Patty in death include her parents; her stepmother May Barrett; her sister Deborah Kay Barrett; and her cousin Robbie Barrett (Diane). Patty is survived by stepsister Jana Dabney (Wayne); stepbrother Woody Young (Penny); cousins Jim Barrett, (Suzie), Marolyn Dragg, (David), Jack Covington (Jenny), Wally Covington (Margaret), Jim Covington (Terri); many dear friends and, of course, her beloved pets. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Kreidler Funeral Home. A memorial service for Patty will take place at 1:00 PM Saturday, 29 March 2014, at First Christian Church DOC, McAllen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church DOC, McAllen, 1400 North Tenth Street, McAllen, TX 78501, or to a local humane society/animal shelter.
