ALICE OGLETREE Obituary

ALICE JOANN OGLETREE McALLEN - It is not the length of life, but the depth of life. God could not be everywhere therefore he made mothers. Alice Joann Ogletree, loving daughter, nurturing mother, and devoted wife passed away on May 21, 2014 at home following a lengthy illness in McAllen, Texas at the age of 83. Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, she was the only child of Chester Thomas (Chet) and Wilhemina (Billie) Craig. Joann is survived by her adoring husband of 62 years, Alfred; her five children: Margaret (Joe) Williamson, Alfred "Bud" (Melinda) Ogletree, Laura (Jorge) Garcia, Tom (Lety) Ogletree, and Dan (Laura) Ogletree; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Joann earned a B.A. from the University of Texas in English, where her love of books grew and her reading blossomed. Between the years of 1956 and 1997, at the University of Dallas to Sul Ross University and ultimately at the University of Texas at Pan American, Joann mentored many young couples during the baseball seasons, she has a very long and loving extended family among baseball players and their families, the most special of those relationships being with Reggie and Sondra Tredaway. Our family has become much richer with your love and support and we know that it is family that keeps us strong. We love and treasure you for being there as we keep you closer than just friends. Joann had many passions; she was a partner in a business venture called "Busy Hands" in the early 80's; she was a charter member of the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild; a Eucharistic minister and CCD teacher at Our Lady of Sorrows Church; she knitted and crocheted hats and blankets for the church mission in Africa; she loved to watch Wheel of Fortune; worked on Sudoku, crossword puzzles, as well as many other games to test her knowledge and memory; and she tried scrap booking. She loved crafts, sewing, clipping coupons, and clipping recipes to share with others. She enjoyed her Kindle and played Candy Crush for hours on end. The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart. Joann taught us all about love and life. Our beloved wife and mother will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Janet Gregory; Rick Fernandez and his staff; Charles Pena; David Hernandez; and Eloy Gonzalez. You were an answer to our prayers; 'In everything give thanks' -1 Thes. 5:18. Our thanks to Merida Hospice for all their assistance. Last but not least, our heartfelt thanks to all of our extended family, friends and neighbors. Your love, thoughtfulness, and support are greatly appreciated. We love you all. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Al and Joann Ogletree Scholarship Endowment by contacting Yvette C. Padilla at (956) 665-5301 or email [email protected]. Visitation will be Monday, May 26, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with a rosary at 7p.m. Funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 at Holy Spirit with burial to follow at 11 a.m. at the RGV State Veterans Cemetery. kreidlerfuneralhome.com Sign the guest book at www.themonitor.com/obituaries
