CALI CARRANZA Obituary
PHARR – On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Cali Carranza, 59, defeated ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) and began leading the Lord's choir. Cali was born and raised in Pharr. He served in the U.S. Army Recruiting Command for over 30 years. He was active in numerous civic and community service organizations, including the Selective Service Board, the Pharr International Bridge Board, and the Pharr Housing Authority Board, where he served as chairman.
However, he will be most remembered for the joy he shared with so many through his music. A musician from the age of 3, Cali earned numerous awards, including Song of the Year, Band of the Year, the Tejano Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame.
To the world he will always be "the ever-smiling Cali Carranza." To those closest to him, he will always be the strong, brilliant, and loving man who was the heart and soul of his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Magdaleno and Adela Carranza; and a sister, Maria Anita Rosales.
Cali is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Maria Carranza, of Pharr; four children, Marissa (Jason) Hernandez, Clarissa Carranza, Cali Michael Carranza, and Julian Matthew Carranza, all of Pharr; four grandchildren, Elijah, Ethan, and Isabella Hernandez, and Ava Guzman; two brothers, Magdaleno Carranza, Jr., Ruben Carranza; two sisters, Elida Garcia and Lydia Garibay.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary today, May 3, 2012, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 4 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2012, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.

My condolences to the Carrazana family and friends. I only just found out about his passing. I met Cali at a recording studio in 1982 where I worked in San Antonio.His music was very inspiring and he made a very good records...

Here we are its almost a yr for Cali's upcoming anniversary. I have been out of the country for several years and just learned of his passing. I met cali in 1983. He was an Army civilian reserve recruiter with the San Antonio recruiting Bn and I was the Army College Recruiting Officer. I learned from him some of the trades to selling a career this is not easy but he was a master and I was a grasshopper as a ypung officer. To this day I'm glad to have served with him in a very high stress leaning forward environment he is a true legend as a human being, community leader, RECRUITER, and a GREAT American, God Bless you and all of your family.

I just found out from a Lieutenant Colonel that Cali passed away. Cali was the LTC's recruiter when he first came in as an enlisted Soldier! I had the pleasure of knowing Cali when I was a recruiter out of the Harlingen Recruting Station. My favorite Cali story is when I first met him and he put his hands on his hip near his "Cali" belt buckle and asked me "Do you know who I am?" Not being from the area, and being totally new I ventured a guess and exclaimed "You're the shuttle driver!" The look on Cali's face was unforgettable and needless to say I often remarked on that moment to give Cali a hard time. Cali was an inspiration to me as a young recruiter and I pray that he rest in peace now and forever. God bless you Cali!

What can i say but that i miss one of my best friends so much. I have known Cali since i was in Jr. High helping him out with the band and later becoming his sound engineer. All i know musically i learned from him. Cali was truly a musical genius making arrangements and writing songs that were amazing and striving for nothing but perfection in all he did. Almost every moment i spent with him i wanted to learn how he came up with the ideas he had and not a moment went by that we didn't talk about music. One great memory i have is when we went to go see Paul McCartney in concert all we talked about was the sound system and the songs. I told Cali during his last days that i wish i could have learned a lot more from him and all he gave me was one of his big smiles. I miss my music mentor but more than that he was my best friend. I love you Cali you will always live in my heart and music. Mary ,Claire and Marissa i am always here for you. We are like family and i love you all.

I was lucky to be a part of the generation that got to attend weddings and quinceaneras where you played. My parents and I love your music, and I got to dance with my grandpa too :) My mom says that everytime she and my dad would walk into a function you would say "this song is for Vicky and Dan" and they would have to start the dance. I also remember when we were in high school that you provided speakers and music for the first game when the Raiders played the Bears...good times :) God bless you and your family on behalf of the Daniel Hernandez Jr. family.

I got to know Tio Cali for only a short moment but his kindness was shown to me when my Randy passed away. When Cali played songs tht Randy liked instead of traditional rosary songs let me remember Randy as him and not the sad moment. That showed me that we didnt have to be in Cali's life 24/7 for him to remember us. That was genuine. He will always be loved and remembered here. Thank God for his kindness.

Cali, the Lord has called upon you to join His chorus in Heaven. You will be greatly missed here on Earth, but will never be forgotten. I had the opportunity to meet Cali back in 1998 when I joined the military. He came to my house to pick me up and take me to a testing site in Mcallen. I was 18 at the time, and coming from Mexico, I wasn't really acquainted with tejano music at the time (I'm a fan now). Cali Carranza knocked on my door, and my parents received him. My parents made small conversation with him while I got ready to go. As soon as I got in his government car, he started asking me questions about why I wanted to join the Army. I kept my answers short and to the point, and only spoke when spoken to. Cali was wearing his Army recruiter uniform. Suddenly he says: "oye mijita, pos de donde son ustedes? No me conocen o que?". At this point I'm thinking Cali is probably related to me! My long lost uncle or something! So I tell him "we are from Los Ramones NL Sir" to which he responded "y no oyen Tejano ustedes o que!" "No Sir, mainly cumbia, and ranchera". He continued: "have you heard ese dude que canta? Ese Cali Carranza?" -"no Sir, I haven't"..."Have you heard this song? Pideme la luna y te la bajare, pideme una estrella..." The minute I heard him sing, I felt like an idiot combined with "what!" "OMG" and "que Queeee?!". I took the test and he brought me back home. I introduced my parents to him (a second time) and told them about who he was! Needless to say, my parents (who have passed on), were astonished to find out he was actually the singer of that popular song @ the time!....Cali continued to be a great support to my family when I was gone, as he did with many other recruits. He was just a fine human being. His human form has disappeared, but his soul and essence will survive through stories like mine and many others' whose lives he touched...

I knew Cali when I worked at Hidalgo High School. He was the Army recruiter for our seniors. I was then a counselor. I admired him for his personality and charisma. He had a great smile. My condolences to Cali's Family. None of you would know me but I went to Army basic training With Cali at Ft.Leonard Wood, MO in 1973. We shared a barracks room with 5-6 other trainees from around the nation. I will never forget these guys' especialy Cali. I was in the Kansas National Guard-don't recall if Cali was active Army or Guard. I met an acqaintanence of Cali's About 23-25 yr ago up here in Kansas while I was working for the KS Guard at Ft. Riley. He came from "the Valley" as he called it and knew Cali when they were all young. This fellows name is Roel Landez. He called me and told me of Cali's passing. We had talked many times over the years about what a small world it is!

My sincerest condolences to the Carranza Family. I had the opportunity to see Cali at St. Anne's and was moved to see that despite his illness--he always had a smile and projected happiness.
