DANIEL GORENA Obituary

DANIEL DAVID GORENA
EDINBURG - Daniel David "Danny" Gorena, 56, departed earth Saturday, February 19, 2011 to begin his heavenly journey. Born July 25, 1954 to Roberto Sr. and Macaria Gorena, Danny always marched to the beat of his own drum. Fun-loving and adventuresome, Danny also found great joy in showering his affection on his numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. Whenever he had a spare moment, he spent it enjoying the serene outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Danny earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science with a minor in business from Pan American University (UTPA) in Edinburg. He became a sworn Texas Peace Officer and worked as a bailiff at the Hidalgo County Court at Law.
One of Danny's greatest journeys was teaching World History at Edinburg North High School for 10 years. He delighted in teaching his students about the world, its people and its politics. When around family and friends, Danny loved to question them about current events, insisting that they remain mindful of the importance of knowing what was happening in the world.
Danny's passion for travel lured him to leave the classroom to work at the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad, Iraq. While in Western Asia, Danny also spent time working in Turkey. He took advantage of the opportunity to see more of the world and especially enjoyed the trips he took to Dubai.
Danny is preceded in death by his father, Roberto Elias Gorena, Sr. and his little brother Raul Rene Gorena.
He is survived by his mother, Macaria G. Gorena, of Edinburg; two sisters, Mariella Gorena of McAllen, Macaria "Caro" Palmetier (Randy) of Austin; a brother Roberto Elias Gorena, Jr. of Edinburg and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Danny's visitation was held Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral services will be at 2 pm, today, February 21, 2011 at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens on Taylor Road in Mission. Pallbearers will be Dr. Andrew de la Garza, Julio de la Garza, David R. Gorena, Rudy Gorena, Richard Guerra and Ramiro Resendez.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to El Buen Pastor Methodist Church or to your favorite charity.
Danny's heavenly journey has just begun.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.

Although I hadn't seen Danny in over 10 years, he was someone who was hard to forget. He was so much fun to be around, always joking and making us laugh. RIP my friend.

What wonderful memories of teaching with Danny at ENHS! He was always smiling and interested in his students. Had many a visit over lunch or coffee about being students at EHS in the early 1970's. My sympathies to the Gorena family.

Danny Gorena was one of the truest friend I will have ever known / I first met Danny in Houston, TX back in 1983 / we became instant friends and life partners / having shared many experiences and schemes with him in Central America, Mexico, Iraq, Dubai, Kenya / we often joked that in our old age we would sit back and write a book about our all mis-adventures / it would have been a book of comedy, intrigue, of the women we encountered, the near death experiences we faced, of our shared sucesses and failures in the end a story of two men who trusted and loved each other as much as we loved and embraced life.
I will miss you every day for the rest of my life / God Bless you Danny and all the Gorena family.
