DARRELL HOGAN Obituary

DARRELL HOGAN Darrell Hogan, 89, of Bandera, Texas, passed away at home on April 6, 2016. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Ed and Lillian Hogan on July 2, 1926. A third generation Texan, his great great grandfather, Andrew Hogan, came to Texas from Ireland in 1842. Later during the Depression, as a young boy, Darrell worked as a paperboy for the San Antonio Light newspaper to help the family. He graduated from Hot Wells High School, lettered two years in football at Baylor, and transferred to Trinity University, where he was team captain for two years, and received All Lone Star Conference and Little All America honors. As the first Trinity Tiger to play for the NFL, he was inducted into the Trinity University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. Darrell played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1949 to 1953. In the 60 games he played as a linebacker, he missed only one down of football due to a slight injury. He intercepted seven passes and returned one 61 yards for a touchdown. He was named to the Steelers All Time team for the first 40 years of football. Until his last few years, Darrell was active in the Former NFL Players Association, where he attended UTSA football games and signed autographs with other former NFL players. He coached high school football and track and fieldat McAllen and Donna high schools. An avid fan of all things western, he watched Gunsmoke every day with his dogs, Little Bit and Blue. Darrell was preceded in death by his son Mike and is survived by former spouse, Betty Wrigley Hogan; children, Anne Hardin, Pat Hogan (Chele) and Susan McKinney, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at noon at the First United Methodist Church in Bandera with fellowship to follow in the parish hall. As Darrell wished to be cremated (or "burned" as Darrell said), there will be no burial. The family invites you to send condolences at www.grimesfuneralchapels.com. So sorry to hear of the passing of Darrell Hogan.I owe much of my success as an antique dealer to him.30+ years ago we traveled together to antique shows in Texas and New Mexico and watching him buy and sell and deal with people, along with his advice, was a great education for me.He taught me to appreciate a good cigar and a fine drink of Irish whiskey. He kinda took me in as his apprentice and it was a great life experience for me.Eating fry bread in New Mexico, trading with the Indians,or smoking a cigar under the trees in Canton are all fond memories. Thanks Darrell. You were a fine example of a life well lived. My wife Sharon also loved Darrell and still cherishes her concho belts and jewelery which came from him.He was like a year round jolly Santa Claus. Our condolences to the family,Bryant and Sharon Dalby

Thoughts and prayers are with the family of Coach Hogan. As a young coach, I was fortunate to have worked with Coach, and I learned a great deal from him. He was a good coach and man that both players and coaches respected.

Mrs. Hogan & kids:
Sad to hear of Darrell's passing. Was nice to see & chat with him briefly a couple of years ago. He was always a significant part of my memories of the years growing up in Donna.
My thoughts are with you.
