D. W. LANCE Obituary
D. W. LANCE Dempsey Walker Lance, age 84 of Seguin (formerly of McAllen), passed away on January 6, 2014. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin from 12 to 1 pm, with funeral services following at 1 pm. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park in New Braunfels. Dempsey was born November 1, 1929 in Gainesville, Texas, to Calvin Douglas Lance and Ola Dean (Miller) Lance. He graduated from Mission High School in 1947, boxed in the Golden Gloves and was first place cotton grower, winning a trip to the National FFA convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Dempsey farmed in south Texas until entering the US Army in 1950, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War until his discharge in 1952. He boxed at Fort Hood, Texas, and Mannheim, Germany, was an Infantry Rifle Squad Leader, achieved the rank of Corporal, and earned Expert Infantryman Badge and European Occupation Medal. Occupations were Farmer/Rancher, Aircraft Technician at Moore Field Air Base, Lead Technician at Shell Oil Company, Engineering Technician with the Federal Aviation Administration, and Real Estate Broker. Hobbies included 4H adult leader (28 years), Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show (28 years), Hidalgo County Farm Bureau director (15 years), raising club calves and hogs for the livestock shows. He was Outstanding Member of Hidalgo County 4H (1995), and earned Breeder of the Year. He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Ann (Johnson) Lance, his parents, and brothers Donald Max Lance and Barney Ross Lance. He is survived by sister Emma Lou LaForge (Jimmy), brother R. Franklin Lance (Carolyn), and children Linda Lance Goslin (Leslie), Thomas Wesley Lance (Jerri), Jo Ann Lance Stevenson (Stan), Karon Smith (Bob), Kenny Gallia (Carol) and Karrie Dell Gallia, 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dempsey will be remembered as an honest, hardworking man, loving brother, uncle, father and grandfather. He never met a stranger and made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed keeping in contact with his Army buddies and sharing stories and jokes with family and friends. Pallbearers will be Kenny Gallia, Tom Lance, James Gallia, David Frank Smith, Denny Ray Lewis, Don Haynes, Steven Lance and Paul Neugebauer. Honorary pallbearers will be Stan Stevenson and Leslie Goslin. The family extends their appreciation to the caring staff of Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center and Guadalupe Valley Hospice in Seguin.
