DANIEL ESCOBAR Obituary

DANIEL R. ESCOBAR April 9, 1964 – December 13, 2013 It's with great sadness of heart that we tell you Daniel R. Escobar passed away December 13, 2013, in Los Angeles California following complications from diabetes. He will be remembered for his tremendous theatrical skill, devastating comic timing and his larger than life personality and infectious humor that naturally drew people towards him. Daniel graduated from McAllen High School in 1982, received his bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts from Southern Methodist University and lived his life-long dream on the stage and screen as an actor for over 25 years. On television, you might have seen him on episodes of Whitney, Two and a Half Men, Weeds, Monk, Desperate Housewives, Curb Your Enthusiasm or perhaps as "Mr. Escobar" in Lizzie McGuire. His film credits include Sympathy for Delicious (special Jury Prize at Sundance), Not Forgotten, The Human Contract, The Mexican, and Blow. Daniel has been a company member at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C. since the early 1990's. Some of Daniel's early credits with Woolly include African Tourist, The Cockburn Rituals, and Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet). In the last few years Daniel was pleased to come back to Woolly where he performed in She Stoops to Comedy, for which he won a Helen Hayes Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Full Circle. Also noteworthy, was his performance in Sheer Madness at the Kennedy Center. Daniel also worked at The Open Fist Theatre in Los Angeles, where he was a company member, and performed in Rock and Roll, Curse of the Starving Class and Room Service, for which he received the L.A. Weekly winner for Best Comedic Performance in a play in 2012. He is preceded in death by his late father, Enrique H. Escobar Jr., survived by his mother, Hilda Escobar, sister, Andrea Escobar, sister, Eunice Escobar Pledger, brother-in-law Dean Pledger, niece and nephew Olivia and Evan Pledger and numerous friends and family members. A memorial service and reception will be held on Dec. 19 at the Hollywood United Methodist Church in Grant Hall beginning at 6:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Daniel R. Escobar Memorial Fund at the Woolly Mammoth Theater, 641 D Street, NW, Washington, DC 20004, phone 202-289-2443 or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at 26 Broadway, 14th floor, New York, New York 10004, phone 800-533-2873, www.jdrf.org. Danny was such a special friend when we were in high school. I was fortunate enough to act with him and compete in TFA acting. His talent and creativity got him and his acting partner, John Mathews all the way to Nationals. Although I was a year older than him, I think I looked up to him even more than he did to me. Even at that early age he knew what he wanted to do and took the initiative and had the responsibility to achieve his dreams. I am so proud of his life and hate that he left us so early. Rest in Peace, my friend.
