Obituary Condolences

ALAMO - Harry Price Sunderland, Sr., 77, passed away at McAllen Medical Center Friday, June 4, 2010. He was born to Carl G. Sunderland, Sr. and Margarita Alvarado Sunderland. He was a lifetime valley resident and a self-employed nursery man for over 50 years operating Sunderland's Cactus Garden of Alamo where he collected and propagated cacti and succulents. He also shipped cacti internationally and landscaped businesses and residential sites. He enjoyed collecting coins, antiques and artifacts and truly enjoyed nature, wildlife, fishing, leather working and woodworking. He was proficient in carpentry, general mechanics and horticulture. He proudly served his country in the US Army where he received a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal, as well. He was a member of the Weslaco Seventh-day Adventist Church, American Legion and the Cactus and Succulent Society of America.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Viola Guerra Sunderland; sons, Harry Sunderland, Jr. of Sonora, CA; Benjamin Sunderland of Pinellas Park, FL; Ted Sunderland of Progreso Lakes, TX; daughters, Sue Ellen Sauder of Moreno Valley, CA and Rita Roberts of Baldwin, FL. Also surviving is his brother, Carl G. Sunderland, Jr. of Del Rio, TX; two sisters, Doris Christopher of McAllen, TX and Emma Lee Keller of Mission, TX along with 10 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will include sons, Harry Sunderland, Jr. and Ted Sunderland; grandson, Chris Sauder; son-in-law, Mel Sauder; and nephews, Saul Santos and Louie Keller.
Visitation is scheduled for today, Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at McCaleb Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Edinburg with Gerry Christman, Pastor of the Weslaco Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating. Military graveside rites to be conducted by American Legion #101 of Pharr, TX. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 W. Fourth St., Weslaco, 956-968-7533.
