MARIA (MARY) MENDIOLA Obituary
MARIA (MARY) MENDIOLA McALLEN - On February 26, 2013 Maria (Mary) Mendiola (79) passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was born on September 23, 1933 in Alamo, TX. Mary was a devoted wife and mother of six daughters, and left a legacy of leadership and vision as an educational Administrator, and civic leader for approximately 50 years She proudly served her community in a number of leadership roles throughout her life. She distinguished herself as the first Mexican American PTA president at her daughter's elementary school and was a Girl Scout Leader and Hidalgo County 4-H Club leader for a number of years as well as a committee member for Hidalgo County Head Start. She went on to serve as a Board Member of the Hidalgo County Consumer Science Program and was an active member of the local branches of the American Heart Association and Cancer Society as well as the McAllen Chamber of Commerce where she served as a member of the Good Neighbor Counsel. Upon her retirement she continued to serve her community as an active member of the Teacher Retirement Association of the Valley and as a volunteer for the Area Agency on Aging. In her career as Purchasing Director for McAllen Independent School district, Mary was recognized by the Texas Education Agency Comptroller of Public Accounts for her contribution as Co-Founder of Texas School Purchasing Seminars. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was most proud of her six daughters and the lives they built through family, careers and community service. Family was of the upmost importance and she dedicated her life to the betterment of her entire family, Her vast assortment of friends were a treasure to her and she will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, strength of character and gentle yet courageous spirit. Mary was a granddaughter in one of the original families of the Valley headed by Manuel Balli Salazar and Juanita Gonzalez, both of Alamo. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Balli, and father Federico Tijerna as well as her father in law, Maximo Mendiola Sr. and her mother in law, Marcela (Nana) Mendiola. She is survived by her long time husband, beloved cowboy forever, and father of her children, Maximo (Max) Mendiola Jr., six daughters, Emma Lilia Mendiola, Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Mendiola, Linda Maxine Gorena, Cynthia Ann (Steve) Speed, Marissa Margot (Hector) Cortez and Melissa Monette Mendiola; Grandchildren, Christopher Michael Champion (Miriam Rosas), Eric (Laura) Champion, Priscilla Ann Skero, Steven and Leiha Speed, Carlos Javier Gonzalez, Hector Alejandro Cortez, Diego Xavier Cortez, Jacob de la Garza, Nathan and Kamryn Garcia, and Olivia and Bianca Gorena. The family wishes to thank the following medical professionals for their ongoing and most recent care of Mary: ICU Staff @ McAllen Heart Hospital, IPC Hospitalist Group, Dr. Jaime Rueda, Dr. Rajeev K. Mathevan and Enedina Rodriguez APRN-CNS. They also wish to thank all the friends, extended family and employers who have shown such compassion and support to Mary and family during this difficult time. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen, TX. A funeral mass will be held Friday, March 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in McAllen, TX. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mission, TX.
