JOHN RICHARD FREELAND Obituary
JOHN RICHARD FREELAND McALLEN - John Richard Freeland passed away on January 31, 2014. He was born on December 12,1920 in Benton County, Indiana outside of Freeland Park. He grew up in Fowler, Indiana and after graduating from Fowler High School he enrolled at The University of Texas. His education was interrupted by World War II, where he served as a naval Lt. JG. John served aboard the U.S.S Custer as assistant beach master in the South Pacific. He was beach master on the beaches during the invasions of Enewetok Island, Saipan, Guam, Marianas Islands and the Philippine islands. He returned to Austin where he obtained his law degree from UT in 1947. John started practicing law in McAllen in July of 1947, with Greer, Cox and Patterson. He later went on to open his own law firm, where his son and daughter later joined him. His last day at the office was January 30, 2014. He married Jayne Rhinehart on August 5,1949. They were blessed with six children, 25 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, with 4 on the way. At the urging of then McAllen Chamber of Commerce manager, Wade Terrell, he was very instrumental in getting the permit for the McAllen Trade Zone. At the time, it was the only non-water port zone. Mr. Freeland served two terms as Chamber of Commerce President. He was named Outstanding Man of the Year in 1970. He served as a board member of the McAllen Medical Center, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, McAllen Country Club, and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation. Mr. Freeland was predeceased by his parents L.I. And Helen Freeland, his sisters Helen Muller, Mary Ann McGinnis, Norma Lauerman and Ruth Rayle. He is survived by his wife, Jayne, his children: Mark (Bethann) Freeland and their children John Anthony and Kristin (Mackenzie, Madison ,and Macie), Beth Carson and Courtney Cloy (Shane), Ann Maree and Hayden Harrison, and Thomas and Elise; Kathy (Bill) Archer and their children Will and Mandy, Elizabeth and Andrew; Scott (Linda) Freeland and their children Sarah, Stephen and Kate (Edmund), Mary, Hannah, Rebekah, Daniel, Matthew and Caleb; Kelly (D.D.) Hoffman and their children Christopher, Barrett, Haley, Samantha and Sommer and Tim Sers (Brady and Harper); King (Charlotte) Freeland and their children Lauren and Charlie Hoag, Zachary and Ryan; and Christopher (Diane) Freeland and children Christopher (Ayden),Taylor and Aaron. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Vic (Jane) Lauerman and sister-in-law Babette Simpson Brandon. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews with whom he was very close. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Stiff, Sandy Hall, Rolando Vallejo, Scott Martin, Ruben Cardenas, Jesse Trevino, Bennie McDonald, Marvin Kautsch, Bill Stocker, Jack Whetsel, Dr. Ivan Kuhl and Dr. Harold Wooldridge, Dr. Dan Chester, Dr. Ken Landrum, Paul Moffitt and Max Burkhart. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the Star of Hope Center (1108 Hackberry, McAllen, 78501), The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer Clinic (101 Expressway 83, McAllen 78503) or the charity of your choosing. Visitation will be held at Kreidler Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, with the family present from 5-7.
