RICHARD "DICK" DAVIS Obituary
RICHARD "DICK" DAVIS COLUMBIA, S.C. - Richard "Dick" Davis, 80, entered into eternal life on Thursday August 14, 2014. Mr. Davis was born on September 25, 1933, the middle son of Harold and Carolyn Davis of McAllen, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Eleanor Davis; sons, Mark Davis (Suzanne), Richard Davis (Maria), Mark Smith (Winnie), Stephen Smith (Bethany); daughter, Carolyn Ruutelmann (Lembit); eleven grandchildren and brother, Robert Davis. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Challis Davis. Mr. Davis received a Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University in 1955, and a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Seminary in 1958. He was ordained in First Baptist Church, McAllen, Texas on November 30, 1958. He served Baptist Churches in Fruitland, NC, Gaffney and West Columbia, SC, and Concord Presbyterian Church, Winnsboro, SC. Following training in Clinical Pastoral Education at SC State Hospital, he served as a Chaplain in the SC Department of Corrections and the SC Department of Mental Health (Columbia Area Mental Health Center). Mr. Davis was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Columbia, where he served as an Elder, Sunday school teacher and chairperson of the Evangelism ministry. He also attended the Shepherd's Center at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church where he served as a board member. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given in his name to the First Christian Church memorial fund, 2062 N. Beltline Blvd., Columbia, SC 29204; Shepherd's Center c/o Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29205; or to a . Dick was beloved by his family, his church family and friends. He will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor, his passion for sharing his faith with others and his gift of storytelling. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church on Saturday, August 30, 2014, with visitation immediately following in the church fellowship hall.
