MISSION - Maria Castañeda, age 69, passed away on December 10, 2008 surrounded by her loved ones after a valiant fight with cancer. Maria was a Mission resident and lived on Lopez Street named after her father, Luis Lopez. Maria resided there all her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Margarita and Luis Lopez; her brother, Marcos Lopez and her grand-daughter Kristin Castañeda.
She is survived by her loving husband of forty-five years, Irineo Castañeda Sr., of Mission, Texas and their eight children, Diana (Homero) Castañeda of Mission, Texas, Gloria C. Martinez of San Antonio, Texas, Linda (Oscar) Perez of Mission, Texas, Irineo (Viviane) Castañeda Jr., of Alice Springs, Australia, Isabel (Reymundo) Castañeda of Mission, Texas, Juliet (Daniel) Castañeda of Austin, Texas, Romeo (Nellie) Castañeda of Mission, Texas and Juan (Carrie) Castañeda of San Antonio, Texas and sisters, Andrea Hernandez of Mission, Texas and Natividad Rivera of Mission, Texas. She is also survived by brothers, Domingo Lopez of Mission, Texas, Victor Lopez of Maricopa, Arizona, Luis Lopez of Fresno, California, Jesus Lopez of Mission, Texas and Fortunato Lopez of Mission, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and a host of family friends.
Maria, affectionately known as "Grandma", was always known to lend a helping hand. We will always remember her for her loving personality, bright smile and quiet ways. Many a time, Maria showered her children and grandchildren with her love, time and energy in their upbringing. May God grant her peace in His heavenly kingdom. Finally, the family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Cavazos and staff, the many nurses and staff at The Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance, of Edinburg, Texas, the nurses and staff at New Era and Dr. Campagna and staff at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas.
Viewing for Maria Castañeda will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel in Mission, Texas. Viewing for Sunday, December 14, 2008, will be from 1 to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel of Mission. Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, Texas. Burial will follow to Texas Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas.
