EMILIA FLORES Obituary
EMILIA FLORES MISSION - Emilia Flores...everyone knew her as Millie. She was born in Mission on Oct. 6, 1922 as one of eleven children of Antonio and Juanita Flores. She graduated from Mission High School before graduating with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in Austin. Later she would earn her Master's degree. Millie was a teacher. She spent decades in the public school system before retiring from the McAllen Independent School District. She taught Spanish at McAllen High School. She coached students after school. Later she worked with physically and mentally challenged children. She knew that with love there is no wall too high. Millie was also fiercely independent and dedicated to her family. She could do most anything that most men could do. In a house full of sisters it was Millie who had the tool chest. It was Millie who taught her young nephew to fly a kite after first making the kite for him. Her yard was impeccable. Her home was a showcase. She could make anything with a sewing machine. She was looked upon as strong. Her strength showed by not turning a single family member away in times of need. When an older sister was struck with dementia it was Millie who turned a bedroom into a hospital room and herself into a nurse. It was a high wall that she climbed every day until suffering a stroke a few years ago. That battle ended at Mission Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, the 23rd day of April in this year of 2013. She was 90 years old. She is survived by a sister, Emma Galindo of Houston; a brother, Arturo Flores of McAllen; and about 16 nieces and nephews and their families. To all of us Millie was the "special" one. We all carry a bit of Millie with us. It comes out every time we come up against a wall. Visitation is April 26, 2013 at 9am Friday morning at Kreidler Funeral home with a service at 10am. Interment will follow afterwards at the family plot at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission. kreidlerfuneralhome.com Sign the guest book at www.themonitor.com/obituaries
