1917 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
JAMES LOWELL GULLY James Lowell Gully, age 95, died peacefully with his family at his side on September 30, 2013, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas. He was born on December 22, 1917 in Liberal, Kansas and grew up in Hooker, Oklahoma. His family moved to Sharyland, Texas from Hooker while he was in his teens. He graduated from Sharyland High School in 1936, one of thirteen graduating seniors in his class. He also attended Edinburg Junior College (now the University of Texas-Pan American) where he played varsity basketball for two years, graduating in 1939. He also graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1941. Lowell served in WW II and in the Korean War. He taught at McAllen High School for twenty-four years. His retirement years were filled with many of his favorite activities: woodworking, gardening, RV-ing and traveling. He enjoyed hiking the mountains of southern New Mexico into his late 80's. Lowell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Masako Gunji Gully and their five children: Steven Gully, Karen Stubbs (Mike), Iris Soto (Robert), Arlin Gully (Diane) and Jason Gully (Michelle). He is also survived by two sisters, Lois Boyd (Earl) and Pat Gully, twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons and one granddaughter. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, 4200 N. McColl Rd. in McAllen.
