Obituary Condolences

EDWIN LEE SMITH Edwin Lee Smith, 90, passed peacefully in his sleep Thursday, March 6, 2014 with his wife Peggy holding his hand. Edwin was born in Alabama to Flossie Lee Johnson Smith and Ernest D. Smith. Flossie died shortly after childbirth and Ernest married Minnie Marie Lowery who became mother to Edwin. Edwin was married to Ila Bert "Peggy" Shaw Smith for 68 years. Edwin was a proud graduate of Auburn University class of 1952. He then was brought to south Texas by Don Bentsen to work at Tide Products of Edinburg. In the 35 years he worked there, he was National Salesman of the Year 10 times. Edwin and Peggy were long time members of Pharr United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and loved traveling in his RV. Ed was very involved with the Masons, Scottish and York Rites. He received his 33rd degree in 2007. Edwin was a veteran of WWII. He is survived his loving wife, Peggy and two daughters, Deborah Lee (Frank) Schuster and Patricia Diane (Daniel) Drefke. His grandchildren are: Kaylee D. (Chris) King, Kurt L. Schuster, Matthew L. (Ashley) Drefke, Emily A. (Samuel) Hutchinson and Max M. (Meagan) Schuster. He also has 3 great-grandchildren: Everett King, Hayden Drefke and Madeleine Schuster. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Edith Swords. He leaves a sister Kathryn Chastain, brother, James (Martharene) Smith and sister Nell (Jimmy) Mathis, The family would like to thank Estela Allie and Teresa Martinez for the loving care they provided Edwin during his final months. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen. Funeral services will be Monday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Pharr United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery, McAllen.
