Wilbur was born on June 5, 1914 in Bethany Township, Gratiot County, to Vern E. and Marcie “Viola” (Armstrong) Wiltse. When Wilbur was six years old, his family moved to eastern Colorado. He graduated from Haxtun High School in 1933. He saw a lot of the United States by hopping the freight trains and working odd jobs as he traveled. Wilbur hoboed between Michigan and Colorado several times. In 1934 he came to Michigan and worked for his Aunt Pearl and Uncle Roy Ouderkirk. He began working on the John Ouderkirk farm where he fell in love with Vilo Ouderkirk. They were married March 10, 1936 in Beaverton. Wilbur helped build several barns in Isabella County and worked in several grocery stores. He even tried his own, “Wiltse’s Market” which opened in 1959. Years later he began working at what is now Gilroy’s Hardware. He did not completely retire until 2008. He was very active in the Mt. Pleasant Community of Christ Church. He was first ordained a deacon, then priest, and then an elder. He served many years as treasurer and one term as pastor. He was one of the few “Jack of all trades, master of none.” Wilbur is survived by his son, Leon Everett (Shirley) Wiltse of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Janet (Dale) Wheeler, Everett (Robyn) Wiltse, and Lori Recker; four great grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Flegel, Justin (Emily) Wheeler, and Anastasya and Natasha Wiltse; two great great grandsons, Brayden and Easton Flegel; brother, Virgil Wiltse of Shepherd; many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
