Oberlander, Marvin; loving father and husband, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014, at the age of 88. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda, and two brothers. He is survived by his seven children, Larry (Joan), Jerry (Florence), Cynthia (Jon), Vickie, Carolyn (George), Debbie and Kristeen (Bukaza), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, George Oberlander. Marvin, born October 24, 1925, grew up on a farm near Kulm, North Dakota. After high school he enrolled at Southwest Missouri State College for his degree in Education and married Nelda in 1947. The family moved back for a time to Alfred, North Dakota, until Marvin furthered his education with a Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University. He began his teaching career in Missouri and then moved the family to continue his career in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Marvin was a far-sighted leader in Vocational Education, developing award winning programs and eventually becoming the Associate Principal and Director of Vocational Education at MPHS in the early 1970s. He earned a PhD in Education from Michigan State University in 1980. Marvin retired in 1990, and moved to Florida with Nelda in 1999. Marvin was skilled at woodworking, leather, and mosaic tile crafts, as well as mechanics and gardening. He delighted in music, and was known for his beautiful tenor. Marvin also enjoyed travelling the world, camping, and fishing and he passed many of these passions on to his children. Throughout his life, Marvin had deep Christian faith; he was an active member of his church, the Moose Lodge and the Masonic Temple, becoming a Grand Master and Shriner. He saw his family as his most important investment in life. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for Marvin will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Mt. Pleasant Area Technical Center or the First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Main Street, Mt.
