Phipps, Donald Robert; age 96; passed on to his heavenly home on Friday, December 12, 2014; at the Schnepp Senior Care and Rehab Center in St. Louis. Donald was born December 27, 1917, in Detroit, the son of Everett and Hattie (Schofield) Phipps. Donald graduated from Waite High School in Toledo, Ohio, in 1936 and in 1942 from Cincinnati Bible Seminary with a Bachelor of Sacred Literature degree. On June 29, 1942, Donald married Bonnie Jean Johnson in Berkley, Michigan. Donald and Bonnie served in ministry for more than 40 years, including Churches of Christ in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, New York, and Wisconsin. He was a member of the Vestaburg Church of Christ. Donald enjoyed reading, music and opera, playing classical guitar, drawing boat designs, camping, hiking, sailing, canoeing, and spending time with his friends. Donald is survived by his sons, John (Melanie) Phipps of Comstock Park, Michigan and David (Amy) Phipps of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Brian (JoAnna), Aaron (Sharon), Jesse Phipps, and Amber Williams (Tom); two step-grandchildren, Benjamin Dameron and Amanda McChesney (Joe); seven great grandchildren; and three nieces. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie on December 9, 2013; his parents, Everett and Hattie; and three brothers, Glenn, Charles and Leonard. Per Donald’s wishes, Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Vestaburg Church of Christ, Pastor Thomas McNerney, officiating. Visitation will be on that day from Noon to 1 p.m., and a reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vestaburg Church of Christ. CARRIER, SETH “JAY”; age 73; of Rosebush; passed away on Friday, December 26, 2014; at Woodland Hospice House. Funeral Services for Jay will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Clark Family Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Kasper of Clare United Methodist Church officiating. A luncheon will follow the Service in the Reflections Reception Center. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 and from 11 a.m. until the time of Service on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Morey Cancer Center or Woodland Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel. Jay was born on November 7, 1941, in Rosebush, the son of Seth John and Mildred (Graham) Carrier. He graduated in the Class of 1959 from Mt. Pleasant High School. Jay married Sharon Phillips on April 8, 1961, in Rosebush. He retired in 2001, after 41 years working as a heavy equipment operator in the pipelines as a member of Local 324. Jay also farmed. He always had time to listen to others. He enjoyed collecting things, and was a member of the Winchester Collectors Club and the Buffalo Bill Firearms Museum in Cody, Wyoming. Jay enjoyed being part of the coffee club at Crankers and the lunch crowd at the White Wagon. Jay is survived by his wife, Sharon Carrier of Rosebush; children Shelly (Mark) Whitney of Weidman, Denise (Kenneth ) Carrier-Norberg of Clare, and Julayne (Heather Kosinski) Carrier of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Jonathan Carrier, Cody Osborn, and Marcus Carrier; two great grandchildren, Kayla and Owen; mother-in-law Mary Phillips of Mt. Pleasant; sister Wilda (Bill) Recker of Clare; in-laws Shirley (Gary) House of Rosebush and Don (Sue) Phillips of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Leah Carrier on November 1, 2014, and brothers Larry and Durward Carrier. Wiltse Virgil Leroy; age 99; of Shepherd; passed away Friday December 26, 2014 at the Woodland Hospice House. Funeral services will be Monday December 29, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Westlawn Church of Christ on Dearing Dr. in Shepherd with Gene Beavers officiating with a luncheon to follow the service at the church. As per Virgil’s wishes cremation will take place after the service, with interment in Salt River Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the Westlawn Church of Christ from 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday. Virgil was born September 3, 1915 in Bethany Twp. In Gratiot County one of five children to Vern E. and Marcie Viola (Armstrong) Wiltse. When Virgil was 4 years old his family moved to eastern Colorado. He finished 8th grade at Haxton public school. He came back to Michigan in the mid 30’s and worked for his Aunt Pearl and Uncle Roy Ouderkirk of Rosebush hauling oilfield pipe from the Mt. Pleasant train depot to the oilfield sites. At the age of 23 Virgil was married to Alice C. Hutchinson on October 17, 1938 in Kit Carson County, Colorado. Virgil worked as a carpenter for a short time helping to build several buildings and homes in Mt. Pleasant. Most of Virgil’s working years were with Bader Milling Co. of Mt. Pleasant. He spent 40 some years in the elevator business and was part owner in the Delwin elevator until it was destroyed by fire in the late 60’s. Virgil has been a member of the Westlawn Church of Christ for many years during which he served as Deacon, Elder and on the church board. Virgil is survived by one daughter, Janet E. (Tom) Haradine of Carson City and one son, Virgil E. (Sharon) Wiltse of Shepherd. By a cousin Laverna Hallock and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hutchinson both of Shepherd, sister-in-law, Nina Mageary of LosAngeles, CA and a son-in-law, James Travis of Mason and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Wiltse of Elwell. Also by 11 grandchildren, Jeanine Smith, Andrew Haradine, Holly (Craig) Keiffer, Molly (Shaun) Sebastian, Amy (Mike) Henderson, Mike (Zann) Travis, Raquel (Chris) Weekley, Wyatt (Laurie) Wiltse, Wade (Kendra) Wiltse Lynde Wiltse, Robert (Sara) Wiltse, and by 24 great grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alice, in 2003, daughter Diana Travis and son, Gordon Wiltse. By his parents, Vern and Viola, 3 brothers, Clayton, Robert, Wilber and 1 sister, Margret Felix. The family would like to say a special thank you to Theresa, Lori and Edward Recker for their extraordinary care over the last few years. Also a big thank you to the recent care givers Pat, Ruth, Bonita, Kay, Jerry and Linda. Also thanks to Woodland Hospice for their care. Memorials may be given to Woodland Hospice or the Westlawn Church of Christ.

Levich, Calman Ph.D., Commander, USN (ret); age 93; of Pentwater, MI; died Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. He spent 26 years in the U.S. Navy. He enlisted during World War II and served as a medic with the Marines on several Pacific island invasions. After the war he was stationed in the Philippines, and then spent the rest of his military career at the former Bethesda Naval Medical Center. During that time he earned his Ph.D., and was involved in radiation research. After his retirement from the Navy in 1967 Dr. Levich taught physics at Central Michigan University before moving to South Orange, New Jersey, to become Chairman of the Physics Department at Seton Hall University. After two years in New Jersey, Dr. Levich decided he wanted to move his family back to Michigan and he returned to Central Michigan University, becoming Chairman of the Physics Department, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. After retiring from academics, Dr. Levich continued his love of education by tutoring students in math and science. Calman’s other passion was Judaism. He led many religious services at Temple Benjamin in Mount Pleasant, taught religious school and tutored many students as they prepared for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies. He is survived by his daughters, Judy Levich of Pentwater and Mimi Levich of Falls Church, VA; and his second wife Lynn Reitsma Levich of Scottville. Calman was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Edith Levich; first wife, Eva Levich; daughter, Rebecca Levich; and son, David Levich. A graveside ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with Rabbi Karen Companez officiating. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel. Terry was born on March 22, 1950, in South Bend, IN, the daughter of Verlin “Bud” and Leta Dell (Rensberger) Fuller. She obtained her master’s in counseling and worked as a social worker for the State of Michigan for 35 years, retiring in 2011. Terry was a part of the Hope United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Evening Bloomers Gardening Club. Terry also enjoyed antiquing and camping. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Terry is survived by her children, Lynsey (Jack) Crego of Hope, Emily (Robert) Noteware of Manistee, Meghan (Jason) Hathaway of Jenison and Katie Gratkowski of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren; her mother Leta Fuller of Alma; and her brother Thomas (Patricia) Fuller of Eagle. Terry was preceded in death by her father. Brown, Betty Mae (Jones); of Six Lakes, MI; passed away on December 23, 2014, surrounded by family. She was born on July 21, 1930, in Blanchard, to Lawrence and Thelma (Eldred) Jones of Blanchard. She married Eugene M Brown on June 18, 1948. Betty was the wife of a dairy farmer, and a business woman who worked for the Department of Education; she baked beautiful wedding cakes as a side business for over 50 years, known as Betty’s Cakes, until she was unable to do so. Betty loved to dance; she was an amazing cook, a very giving and kind woman whom opened her home to others when they needed a meal or a place to stay. Betty is survived by her loving and devoted spouse, Eugene; her sons, Jerald Brown, Sr. of Six Lakes and Donald Brown (Scherry) of Shepherd; and close family friend, Dennis Vaughn (Vickie); her grandchildren, Jerald Brown, Jr. (Alexandrine) of Edmore, Sonja Rasmussen (Mike) of Edmore, Jamie Brown (Jessee) of Six Lakes, Gina Donaldson (Jeremiah) of Akron, Ohio, Jodi Gamboa (Dave) of Alma, Jennifer Crawford (Kris) of Shepherd, and Alisha Pung (Mike) of Shepherd; 15 great grandchildren, as well as, 2 great great grandchildren. She was survived by 2 brothers, Jimmie Jones (Kay) of Blanchard and John Jones (Joni) of Gaylord. She was proceeded in death by her son, Ricky Brown; her parents, Lawrence and Thelma Jones; her in-laws, George and Elsie Brown; her daughter-in-law, Arlene Brown; brother-in-law, Daale Christensen; sister-in-law, Doris Brown; her brothers, Carmine (Buddie) Jones and Lawrence Jr.; and sisters, Wanita Campbell and Donna Rausch. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014 at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic Church in Edmore, Michigan.
