Alexandra "Sandra" Tolas

October 26, 1923 – January 11, 2014

Sandra Tolas, age 90, of Mt. Pleasant passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at her home with her family by her side.

She was born to the late Serafim and Chrysoula Marks, October 26, 1923, in Korfoula Kastoria, Greece. Sandra graduated from Beauty School and was a hairdresser in Greece. On October 18, 1953 she married the late James Tolas, in Chicago, IL, where they lived until they relocated to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in 1964.

She had lived through the Greek Vivil War (1945 - 1949) after which her uncle, Tom Marks made arrangements to bring her entire family in the 50's to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Sandra was an active member of both Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. At Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church she was a member of Philoptochos for many years. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Saginaw Greek Festival.

Her passion was cooking, baking, gardening, and knitting. She had received many blue ribbons at the county fair for her Greek pastries. Sandra was very adventurous, always trying out something new like tennis, zumba, yoga, and working out at the gym. Sandra loved her family and friends, always giving her all. Her gift to all was her generosity, hospitality, sense of humor, and laughter. She will truly be missed, but never forgotten.

Sandra is survived by her daughter, Krisulla "Tresa" Haveles of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Petro and George Tolas, both of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Yanni, Eleni, and Dimitri Haveles; sister, Eva (Bill) Mourtzhous; two brothers, Archilles (Afroditi) Marks and Milton (Yiota) Marks; and many nieces, nephews, and a goddaughter.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James Tolas in 2013; parents; and sisters, Malamati Sarakatsanis, Efrosini Anastasiou, and Demetrioula Markou.

Funeral Services for Sandra will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Thursday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m. with His Grace Bishop Ilia Katre and Fr. Mark Sietsema officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m with a Trisagion at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 12 noon until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lansing, MI, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saginaw, MI, or Heartland Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
