Hershel H. Powell, age 84, of rural Ithaca, passed away October 31, at the Woodland Hospice Home in Mt. Pleasant, after a long battle with renal failure. At his request, Cremation has taken place.
He was born November 11, 1928, in Wheeler Township, to Myron J. and Lillian M (Butcher) Powell. He married June M. Skinner on July 19, 1947. They made their home in Gratiot County and raised 6 children together. Hershel worked at Motorwheel in Lansing for 35 years, then retired and served as owner/ operator of Powell Sand and Gravel.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and meeting his friends at McDonald's in Ithaca for their morning coffee. Despite being on dialysis for sometime, he chose to stop treatment so that he could take some final fishing trips to Canada with sons, Gerald, Doug and Larry and continued to live an active life until just recently.
Hershel was preceded in death by his parents; wife of nearly 64 years, June in 2011; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Harnick; sister, Geneva Johnson; youngest son, Roger in 2004; and sister-in-laws, Nancy Hall and JoAnn Acker. He is survived by his step-mother, Martha Powell of Breckenridge; and his children, Gerald and Sylvia Powell of Independence, Missouri, Ginger Vetter of Wheeler, Barb and Bill Clark of Wheeler, Douglas and Althea Powell of Perrinton, and Larry Powell of Ithaca; as well as 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
Services will be held at Barden's Funeral Home in Ithaca on Friday, November 8, 2013 with Visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. and memorial to follow. Luncheon will be held at The Ithaca Community Center.
