Olive Mary Smedley Laverty-Whaley, age 93, of Farwell, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013. Olive was born February 27, 1920, in Sanford, Michigan, to Walter and Elizabeth (Wagner) Smedley. She was the last survivor of her 7 siblings, Virginia Grell, Eva Tigner, Edward Smedley, Earl Smedley, Mable Stirling, Cora Smedley, and William Smedley. Olive was married to Wilton Laverty and Harold Whaley, who both preceded her in death.
Olive is survived by 2 sons, Larry (Mignon) Laverty, John (Jane) Laverty, and one daughter, Lynn (Steven) Grim. A son, Steve LJ Laverty, was killed in action in Vietnam in 1970.
Olive is survived by 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Bowling and Roberta Smedley; and brother-in-law, Dale (Joyce) Laverty.
Olive loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her neighborhood on "Bertha Drive" in Farwell.
A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Arrangements for Cremation were handled by the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home. Memorials in her name may be made to the Farwell United Methodist Church or the Veterans' Freedom Park of Clare County.
