After the war, Rudy worked throughout the state of Michigan as a sales representative for the BF Goodrich Company where his gift of gab and tales of growing up in Texas earned him many life-long friendships. His favorite pastimes included playing cards and dominoes, deer hunting, and spending time with his grandkids, showing them how a “horse bites corn” and teaching them to whistle with their hands. He was passionate about golf; playing until the age of 93. He loved “story telling time” spent on the course with his son and two son-in-laws and was particularly proud of his three holes-in-one. Rudy is survived by his loving and caring wife of 11 years, Joyce (Schafer) Carter and his 3 children: Tom Carter (Barbara Engelhardt); Peggy Carter Gilstad; and Connie (Bob) Petrovich; stepchildren: Charlotte (Mike) Lane; David (Patti) Schafer; Steve (Stacy) Schafer; Marty (Ann) Schafer; Sue (John) Rexford; Mike (Charlene) Schafer; Ron (Amy) Schafer; Deb Schafer (daughter-in-law); 31 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
