Dale J. Hassenzahl, age 77, of Shepherd, Michigan, passed away May 4, 2013, at Masonic Pathways.
Dale was born in Pontiac, Michigan, the son of Ernest and Emma (Bartlebaugh) Hassenzahl. The family moved to Crystal, Michigan, where he spent most of his school years and graduated in 1953. One of his high school highlights was being on the basketball team.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1958, most of that time being spent in Germany.
After his discharge he was employed by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department for 5 years and later was employed by GM (Pontiac Motors) for 30 years, first as a sweeper and then as a pipefitter.
Dale's "leisure" time, during his working years was spent plowing snow, cutting firewood and building cabins. After retirement he raised deer, raced horses and roller skated until age 74.
Dale was a member of the Clare Church of the Nazarene, where he attended faithfully until his illness.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Michael Hassenzahl of Lake Orion; daughter, Michelle (Paul) Foppes of Ortonville; sister, Carol (Morris) Beal of Duncanville, TX; step-son, Douglas (Cathy) Lockwood; step-daughter, Rebecca (Ronald) Meadors; grandchildren, Pablo Balderas, Melissa Balderas, and Steven Hassenzahl; 4 step-grandchildren; and 1 great step-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Hassenzahl at age 39; daughter, Melissa Hassenzahl at age 15 months; and step-son, Keith Lockwood.
Memorial Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Clare Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Jim Young officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Berry Funeral Home.
