David Wayne Sommerville, age 88, of Alma, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Masonic Pathways.
He was born on December 6, 1925 in Flushing, the son of Harry and Minnie Mae Sommerville. Dave graduated from Flushing High School where he excelled in baseball and track. He served his Country in the United States Navy during WWII. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Dave studied broadcasting at the Pasadena City College. On January 28, 1950 he married Mary Lou Bragg.
In 1950 Dave and Gil Thomas purchased the WFYC Radio Station in Alma that was started by a group of Alma businessman in 1948. Together they enjoyed running the station together for 35 years. In 1985 Dave and his son, Jim bought out Mr. Thomas and the Sommerville family continues to run WFYC and WQBX today.
Dave was a member of the Alma United Methodist Church, Pine River Country Club, life member of the Alma Elks Lodge #1400 and the Alma Masonic Lodge #244. He served as past president of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and was a past Grand Marshall of the Alma Highland Festival. Dave was inducted into the Alma High School Athletic Hall of Fame as an Ambassador for his contributions to broadcasting sporting events. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and U of M fan.
Dave is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou of Alma; four children; Jim (Denise Bickel) Sommerville of Alma, Kathy Sommerville of Alma, Karen (Darrell) Hundey of Temperance and Rich Sommerville of Alma; 13 grandchildren; Jeff (Carmen), Nadia (Eric), Keven, Sean, Kilee, Nathan, Adam, Michelle (Trevor), David, Nick (Lisa), Darcie (Steve), Brianna and Brittany, eight great-grandchildren; Landon, Joey, Livy, Blake, Brianna, Taya, Ben and Emily.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and 12 siblings.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Doig Chapel, Masonic Pathways with Pastor George Ayoub officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma. Memorial contributions may be made to .
