James Adams Obituary

ADAMS, James A.; 85 years of age; passed away on October 16, 2015, after spending over four weeks in the hospital. Jim was born on February 1, 1930, in Richmond, Indiana to Earl and Anna (Kortright) Adams. After his mother passed away on his fourth birthday, Jim was raised by foster parents, his great uncle and aunt, William and Martha Solomon. He married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Marilyn Cordell, on August 29, 1949. Together they had four sons. One son, Dwight Adams, died in 1977, at the age of 24. Their other 3 sons are Robert (Beverly) in St. Louis, MI, Ron (Melinda) in Battle Creek, MI, and Marv (Lynn) in Saline, MI; Jim has 8 grandchildren, Marci Billingsley (Bryan), Michelle Adams, Megan Adams, Jeremy Adams (Cindy), Nathan Adams (Jennifer), Laura Kimbell (Kyle), Melissa Mercik (Michael) and Eric Adams; Jim also has 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Mendle Adams (Charlene), sister, Marlene Crowder (Charles) and sister, Ricki Kirk (Doug). In addition to Jim’s son Dwight, he was preceded in death by his foster parents, William and Martha Solomon, and his father and step-mother, Earl and Margaret Adams. Jim started his ministerial career with his lifelong, best friend, Wilbur Brannon, at the age of 15. He attended Olivet Nazarene College for more formal training before taking on full-time pastor duties for 43 years in five communities in Iowa and two communities in Michigan. After retiring from full time ministry, he continued his service as an associate minister in Midland, Michigan. He loved each community he served, but felt a special connection to the St. Louis Church of the Nazarene, where he served for over 21 years. Jim was driven by a strong purpose to care for and help develop people to live better lives. In addition to his full time pastor roles, Jim was involved in or led the start-up of several community service organizations, including The Office of Human Services in St. Louis, Michigan. He was a retired, ordained minister and member of the Michigan Nazarene District, a member of the Midland Church of the Nazarene, and often attended the Alma, Michigan Church of the Nazarene. Jim’s Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 2 p.m., at the St. Louis, Michigan Church of the Nazarene, located at 1001 West Washington Ave. (M46) in St. Louis. Pastor Brad Dyrness and Pastor Randy Owens will officiate the service. Visitations will be held at the same church on Monday, October 19, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m., 6 to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. just prior to his Funeral Service. Memorials can be made to Habitat for Humanity of Gratiot County, 525 N. State St., Suite 8, Alma, MI 48801; or The Office of Human Services, 232 N. Mill St., St. Louis, Michigan 48880. Dear Marilyn and Family:
Pastor Adams was a very special person to our family. He married us and dedicated our two children. He also helped and guided us closer to our Lord during his ministry at the St. Louis Church of the Nazarene. Rod's grandfather, L.G. Palmer, was one of the first organizers of the St. Louis Church of the Nazarene. Rod's dad, Ivan Palmer, helped build the new St. Louis Church of the Nazarene. Ivan and Marian Allen were largely responsible for bringing Pastor Adams from Iowa to St. Louis. Heaven has gained a fantastic person, who will be immensely missed on this earth. God bless all the Adams Family and please accept our condolences and prayers during this time.

Marilyn and family: Jim was my sidekick for 9 yrs in ministry together at Midland Community Nazarene. As my Associate Pastor, Marilyn and he were a great encouragement and help for me. Their constant connection and visitation with our congregation was an example of true commitment and calling. His fun loving atttitude always lightened my load. The joy of the Lord was evident in everything he did. May God Himself comfort this wonderful family with that same joy, grace and love Jim lived out for all to see. Thanks be to Jesus for his influence on me. I regret not being able to attend the service due to distance.
