John C. Tousley Obituary
JOHN C. Tousley
Aug. 29, 1933-June 28, 2013

John Tousley, age 79, of Mt. Pleasant, went home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2013, from Mid-Michigan Medical Center, Midland. As was fitting for a man who brought music to so many, family members sang John's way into heaven, as they laid his hand in the hand of the Savior he loved and served so well.
A Celebration of John's life will take place at Mt. Pleasant Community Church, Tuesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. The family will greet friends at the Rowley Funeral Home on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service or to Mt. Pleasant Community Church.
John was born August 29, 1933, in Traverse City, MI, to Clarence W. and Muriel D. (Stables) Tousley (Brack). He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 59 years; three children, Leslie (Chris) Corneau of Shelby Township, Janice (Richard) Driessnack of Peoria, IL, and John (Sandra) Tousley of Waupun, WI.; five grandchildren, Julie (Ryan) Hendricker, Katie Chynoweth, Richard (Alyssa) Driessnack, Christy (Andrew) Billhartz, and Megan (Eric) Nollet; and seven precious great grandchildren, Micah, Nolan, and Aubrey Driessnack; Matthew, Bradley, and Anna Hendricker; and Austin Billhartz. John is also survived by a brother, Paul (Nancy) Tousley, of Traverse City and Northville; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Larry and Cora VanSlambrook, of Pinckney.
John grew up in Traverse City, graduating from Traverse City High School in 1951. The untimely death of his father made it necessary for him to attend high school only part-time for several years, while he carried on the family business. In 1952, he made his way to Ann Arbor to pursue a career in Music Education at the University of Michigan. It was there that he met and married "the love of his life," Barb, and, in 1957, received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. A Master's Degree in Education followed, from Wayne State University. His teaching years were invested in Grosse Pointe, Pontiac, and Mt. Pleasant Public Schools. John was the recipient of the Michigan School Vocal Association Teacher of the Year Award for 1974-75, and the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools Excellence in Teaching Award for 1984-85; however, the treasure he valued most was the esteem of his students, each of whom claimed a special place in his heart. After retirement from teaching, John and Barb served for 19 years with the Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service, a missionary service organization that took them (and their fifth wheel trailer) to a variety of places all over the U.S.
John's gift of music marked a lifetime of teaching, soloing, and directing. He retired in the fall of 2012 from 55 years of directing church choirs, the last 33 years being at Mt. Pleasant Community Church, where he and Barb were charter members. Second only to conducting a fine choir, were John's favorite pastimes: working on his big yellow farm tractor (sometimes with a great grandchild on his lap); setting out with his favorite chain saw to transform unsuspecting dead trees into firewood; and grocery shopping at Kroger's.
The Tousleys loved traveling and camping in all 50 states. Favorite family memories hail from camping with their children, and, later, their grandchildren. But John's heart was always in the little spot in the woods that they called home. In recent years he often returned from traveling to say, "I LOVE HOME!" and now he is in his eternal home.
