March 11, 1932 - Sept. 12, 2013
Leland "Oz" Oswald age 81, of Elwell, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2013 at his home. Oz was born March 11, 1932 at the family homestead in Ferris Township, the son of J.C. and Cora Belle (Gilbert) Oswald.
He graduated from Vestaburg High School, the class of 1950. Leland married Marilyn Christiansen on February 18, 1956. He served in the National Guard for 17 years.
Oz worked for over 30 years for the State of Michigan, retiring in 1989. After retirement he worked at McDonalds of Alma and Nichols Financial. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and University of Michigan sports. Oz was also a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and was happy and proud to see both of his grandchildren graduate from high school and told everyone they are students at Alma College.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; daughter, Linda of Elwell; son, Curtis (Tammy) of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Jessica and CJ of St. Louis. He is also survived by three sisters, Diane (Wayne) Stearns of Boon, Joan (Bill) Erskin of Clare, Nita (Mark) Prey of Virginia.
Oz was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Duane.
Per Oz's wishes a cremation has a taken place and a Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Chapel Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 3401 E. River Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858.
