Leon David Byl, age 78, of Alma, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Masonic Pathways, Doig Chapel beginning with a Masonic Service followed by Chaplain Matthew S. Cockrum who will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children (drivers fund) in care of Scotland USA Shrine Club, 1200 Wright Ave., Alma, Mi. 48801.
Leon was born January 22, 1934 in Grand Rapids the son of Leonard and Nellie (Spruit) Byl. Leon graduated from Creston High School in Grand Rapids in 1952 and attended Aquinas College in Grand Rapids graduating in 1959. He married Mary Louise Forsberg on May 20, 1955 at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids.
Leon served his country in the
United States Navy
Reserves from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1961. During his service he was stationed on the USS Midway CVA 41 Aircraft Carrier from May 1953 until November of 1954 and was later stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital from November of 1954 until January of 1955 in Portsmouth, VA.
Leon worked for Chrysler Motors and
. He later took a position with the State of Michigan, working for 14 years with the Department of Community Mental Health in Mt. Pleasant and then spent 10 years in their Department of Civil Service, retiring in May of 2001.
He was a member of the Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Alma Lodge #244 Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan, Valley Bay City Scottish Rite, Elf Khurafeh and the High Twelve. He was also a life member of the Alma
#1400 and the American Legion Post 258 in Grand Rapids. He was a member and past president at the Pine River Country Club and the Scotland USA Shrine Club of Alma.
Leon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise of Alma, six children, David (Katherine) Byl, Danny (Joyce) Byl, Derrick (Deanna) Byl, Carolyn (Craig Schmitter) Byl, Charlotte (Bruce) Larsen and Rebecca (Brent) Johnson, his grandchildren, Eric Byl, Rachel Byl, Breanne Byl, Ian Byl, Ashley Byl, Mercedes Byl, Blake Byl, Grace Nawrocki, Raven Johnson and Griffin Johnson. Also a sister, Lois Mae Kadowaki, a nephew, Mark Kadowaki and a niece, Carol Chamblin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Paul Kadowaki.
