VANHORN, RAYMOND (BABE) ALVIN; age 60; of Mt. Pleasant; passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014, at McLaren Central Michigan; surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services for Ray (Babe) will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ronald Thompson. The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, May 19, 2014 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 10 a.m. until the time of Service. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel. Ray (Babe) was born on April 19, 1954, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Fredrick and Rosaline (Kullman) VanHorn. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Ray (Babe) married Patricia Mae Deming on November 22, 1974, in Mt. Pleasant. Ray (Babe) worked in the printing industry for over 30 years and then worked as a security officer for the Soaring Eagle Casino over the last five years. Ray (Babe) was a past governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a member of the American Legion. He was the youngest member to be inducted into the Mt. Pleasant Bowler’s Hall of Fame. In addition to being a great bowler, he enjoyed coaching the Youth Bowling Program for many years. He also coached Pony League Baseball for 16 years although he didn’t have a son of his own and volunteered to run the State Tournament for several years. His coaching continued on to fast-pitch softball, in which he also played, and won several trophies. He was also an umpire for the Gratiot County Baseball League for several years. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. His teachings and sports enthusiasm were passed on to his three grandsons and granddaughter. He missed bowling to go the grandkids’ school functions. The relationships, teachings, and bonds built with his grandchildren will last forever. The values he has taught his daughters has been, and will be, instilled in their children and will be his legacy. Ray (Babe) is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patty VanHorn of Mt. Pleasant, MI; children, Amanda (Moises) Franco of Atlanta, GA, Amy (Tom) Walton of Newcastle, WY, and Andrea Shankel (Tim Barber) of Shepherd, MI; four grandchildren, Ryan “RZ” and Andrew “Drew” Shankel, and Isabella Jean and Alejandro Jesus “AJ” Franco; brother, Fredrick (Diana) VanHorn of Waco, TX; sisters, Pamela Robinson, Rebecca VanHorn, both of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Cindy (Gary) Wright of Munising, MI, and Louann (Rick) Rolston of Mt. Pleasant, MI. Ray (Babe) is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Ray (Babe) was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dianne VanHorn.
