Robert Duane Bergquist Obituary
Nov. 9, 1943-Mar. 25, 2013

Robert Duane Bergquist,
age 69, of Bluffton, SC, passed away on March 25, 2013 in Bluffton, SC.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sauls Funeral Home and Crematory in Bluffton at 10 a.m. on April 12, 2013 with a military burial at the Beaufort, SC Veteran's Cemetery following the service.
Bob was born on November 9, 1943 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the son of Dorothea Wood Bergquist and the late Ralph David Bergquist. He grew up in rural Weidman and Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1961. After a short period of working in sales and construction, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a sonar specialist and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base, Key West Naval Air Station and Newport Naval Base in Rhode Island. On May 25, 1968 he married Irene McDermott in Providence, Rhode Island.
Bob and Irene moved to Mt. Pleasant where he became a partner in Hibberd Janitor Supply. They moved to Rhode Island in 1976 to open his building business and a chimney re-lining company, BIKK Enterprises during which time, he reconstructed large chimneys in gilded-age mansions in Newport, Block Island and Nantucket. In 2005, he moved his business, "The Awning Guy" to Bluffton, SC. From a young age, Bob was involved with Boy Scouts of America and several years served as a leader and camp counselor at Camp Rotary in Clare, Michigan.
He was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends, neighbors and family whenever they had a project with his expertise. From the time he was a child and tinkered with radios and clocks, he could fashion a solution to problem building situations. Just prior to his death, he completed a finely crafted wall unit and desk for his computer, books and files.
Mr. Bergquist was preceded in death by his father Ralph Bergquist.
He is survived by his wife, Irene McDermott Bergquist, and their daughters, Kristen Bergquist of Bluffton and Kellie(Sam) Hoyt of Hampton, VA, grandsons Will, Rob and Michael Hoyt and granddaughter Quinn Bergquist, his mother Dorothea Bergquist, Mt. Pleasant, MI and sister Janet(Richard) Potter, Greensboro, NC. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. The family extends their wishes of gratitude to Dr. Nicholas Costrini and his staff, St. Joseph/Candler Hospital and their many friends and family for their love and concern during his illness.
Sauls Funeral Home and Crematory has made all the arrangements.
