Wilbur "Tony" Waggoner, age 89, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, September 23, 2013 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.
A Memorial Service for Tony will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Diane Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, CMU Athletic Department, or to an organization of your choosing. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and the church during the service.
Tony was born May 28, 1924 in Sutherland, IA, the son of Charles and Marilla (Brookfield) Waggoner, both deceased. Tony graduated from Sutherland High School in 1941. He married Geraldine "Jerrie" Agler on August 14, 1946. He continued his studies at nine different institutions of higher education. Tony received a Bachelors Degree at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA. He received a Masters Degree at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, and his Doctorate in Education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Tony was a high school teacher, coach, principal in Rembrandt, IA, and superintendent of schools in Lake Center, IA. Most of his teaching career was spent at Central Michigan University beginning in 1956. He retired January 1, 1987 as Professor of Mathematics. Tony also served two years as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Tony was long involved with Kappa Mu Epsilon, the honor society for undergraduate mathematics. He served as Business Manager of the "Pentagon" the official journal of KME. Following that, he was National Treasure for KME for several years. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the initial George R. Mach distinguished Service Award for meritorious service to Kappa Mu Epsilon.
Tony was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a long time member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club where he served on the Board of Directors and was President of the organization. Tony and Jerrie have been members of the First United Methodist Church since arriving in Mt. Pleasant 1956. Tony had served as chairman of the Finance Committee at FUMC.
Tony served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 with the rank of Ensign.
Tony and Jerrie enjoyed golf, traveling and had traveled to all of the fifty states and six continents and well over fifty countries. Tony and Jerrie have spent the last years of their retirements in Mt. Pleasant and Florida at Vero Beach.
He was a devoted father and grandfather to seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine L. "Jerrie" Waggoner; daughter, Jane (Richard) Grewe of Traverse City; son, Greg (Brigette) Waggoner of Hillsboro, OH; daughter-in-law, Agnes Reid Waggoner of Mt. Pleasant; sisters, Donna Merry of Garden Grove, CA, and Joyce Mays of Hesperia, CA; brother-in-law, Donald Dingman of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Arline Waggoner of Sioux Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Melissa (Grewe) Zettel and her husband, Ted; Elizabeth (Grewe) Orr and her husband, John, Jr., Michael J., Matthew G., Jason A., Kelly M., and Katie N. Waggoner; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Tony was preceded in death by his son, Dennis "Denny" Waggoner; parents; brothers, Ronald and Robert; and sister, Harriet Dingman.
