Barbara Jean Verwey, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.
A Funeral Mass for Barbara will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, December 28, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Loren Kalinowski officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in the Calvary Cemetery The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Vigil for Barbara at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Academy Foundation or Isabella County Medical Care Facility. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and the church during Mass.
Barbara was born on January 6, 1930 in Lansing, the daughter of Glen and Mary (Knight) Kanine. She married John Peter Verwey on March 5, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where both remained lifetime members. The two of them spent 59 loving years together raising their family. John preceded Barbara in death on November 9, 2012. Barbara enjoyed playing bingo and traveling to Arizona with her late husband. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by her three sons, Andy (Cindy) Verwey of Mt. Pleasant, David John (Cindi) Verwey of Mt. Pleasant, and Daniel Joseph (Michelle) Verwey of Monroe, NC; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and brother, James (Katie) Kanine of Shepherd.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John Peter Verwey; and parents.
The Verwey family would like to thank all of the staff at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility for their compassion and care over the last few years and a special thanks to Anne' Marie, Matt, Desiree, and Jessica for their tender care of grandma.
