Betty Jane Larsen Paton, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at her home in Hudson, Florida. She was born December 23, 1930 in Allen Park to Henry and Olive Larsen.
Betty grew up in Greenville, Michigan. She had to start kindergarten a year later due to a broken leg and a noisy walking cast, and later skipped eighth grade and entered ninth grade at Greenville High. Her ride to a one-room schoolhouse was ten miles by bus. Her father would not let his only daughter, Betty; milk the cows in the morning before going to school. Betty enjoyed spending time at Lincoln Lake, MI during the summers. She won first prize for an apple pie at a 4-H fair as a young girl.
After high school she earned a BS and a Masters at Central Michigan University. Betty was a founding sorority member and secretary of Sigma Phi Omicron, a treasurer of the Home Economics Club, member of ACM, and a member of the Newman Club. Betty started her teaching career after her sixth child turned two years old. She made a difference in the lives of many as a teacher of Home Economics at St. Louis High School in St. Louis, Michigan, and as an FHA advisor. She served on the board of the Gratiot County Credit Union. Betty also worked as a Day Care Coordinator for RCMA in Florida. Betty lived, worked, and served for 30 years in St. Louis, Michigan, and for another 30 years in Florida. She served as President, Vice President, and Secretary of the Viva Villa residential Civic Association where she lived in Hudson, Florida.
Betty was married to James Dean Paton on June 25, 1955 and they spent 58 years as loving husband and wife. Betty was a faithful and devout Catholic who prayed thousands of Rosaries during her lifetime, and many received a multitude of blessings. She was very involved at Mount Saint Joseph in St. Louis, Michigan as a Reader, Eucharistic Minister, and singer in the choir. She was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Teresa's in Hudson, Florida.
Betty was an avid seamstress and made all the grandchildren's costumes for Halloween and school plays. She also created beautiful tee shirt quilted bedspreads for many of her grandchildren. Betty used her skills to make capes for the school homecoming queen every year.
Her parents Henry Roosevelt and Olive Catherine (Somers) Larsen and niece Kristin and nephew Martin preceded Betty in death. Betty is survived by her husband Jim Paton of Hudson, Florida; children Pat (Cheryl), Mike (Carla), Dan (Wendy), Jana (Rick), Ann (Fred), and Jon (Kris); 13 grandchildren: Helena, Ryan, Mary Lynn, Casey, Emily, Marissa, Kristen, Steven, Erick, Robert, Justin, Adam, and Anna: 3 great grandchildren: Dylan, Quinton, and Brayden; 3 brothers Victor (Joyce), Don (Yvonne), Harold; nephews: Mike, Mike, Brian, Brad, Mark, Teddy; nieces: Margaret, Mary; many dear friends in Michigan and Florida.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Mount Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 605 S. Franklin, St. Louis, Michigan 48880 at 11 a.m. on August 23, 2013, with a luncheon to follow in the church hall. Flowers can be sent to St. Mary, 510 N. Prospect, Alma, MI 48801 and will be delivered to Mount Saint Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the .
