Donald Jarman Cotter, Sr., age 81, of Mt Pleasant passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at his home.
Funeral Services for Donald will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Jason Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Visitation will continue on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Woodland Hospice or to Food with Friends at the Commission on Aging. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
Donald was born on December 23, 1930 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of William and Mable (Jarman) Cotter. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1949. He farmed for a short period before working at Oldsmobile in Lansing and Clare Carburetor in Clare, MI. He also worked for Gordon Drilling Co. from April 1952 to April 1956. He worked at Dow Chemical Co. as a rigger from April 26, 1956 to February 28, 1987.
He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant, the Clare Rock and Mineral Club and enjoyed going on field trips all over the United States and several countries. He was a member of the Genealogy Club and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross blood drives, being day captain and making "911" signs for many areas and was named Volunteer of the Year several times. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, bowling and craft work.
He married Margaret "Lucille" Goffnett on August 15, 1962 in Mt. Pleasant. Lucille and Donald were married 48 years before her passing on June 12, 2011.
Donald is survived by his children: sons, Donald, Jr. (Tricia) Cotter of Rosebush, Linden (Dorene) Cotter of Farwell and daughter, Roni (Dan) Howard of Clare; step-children: Gwen (Jerry) Schlorff, Jean (Darell) Potter, Marilyn (Larry) Allen and Bob (Beth) Goffnett all of Mt. Pleasant, grandchildren, Sara (Todd) Hunt, Sean and Michelle Cotter, Allison (Matt) Hudson, Andrea Cotter and Lisa Lynch; 10 step-grandchildren; great grandchildren, Hayden Hunt, Spencer, Chloe and Marcus Lynch, Addaley and Weston Hudson, and 20 step-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Gladys Jurado of Midland, MI; 1 sister-in-law, Bernice (Merle) Cotter of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; sister-in-law, Mary (Dalton) Cotter of Chicago, Illinois; and nephews and nieces. He's also survived by his special friend/companion, Freida Augustine.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, both parents; brothers, Doyle Cotter, Shadrack Cotter, Earl Cotter, Dolph Cotter, Dalton Cotter, Merle Cotter and Orville Cotter; one sister, Eva May (George) Campbell; sister-in-laws, Pauline (Orville) Cotter and Catherine (Doyle) Cotter; and stepson, Richard L. Goffnett.
