Nov. 8, 1912-Aug. 27, 2013
Evelyn Mary Bovee passed away at her home surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born November 8, 1912, in Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada to James and Elsie Gagnon. Evelyn graduated from South Lake High School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, in 1930. She attended Cleary College and graduated from Eastern Michigan University where she met and married her husband, Norvall C. Bovee.
Evelyn was visibly active in the Mt. Pleasant community her entire adult life. She devoted twenty-five years of service as a Girl Scout leader and received the "Thanks Badge," scouting's highest honor. She was President of the United Way for three years and served the senior citizens of Isabella County untiringly through her work at the Hospitality Center and later the Commission on Aging. She helped lead the Expansion Fund for Central Michigan Community Hospital and served as the board of trustees' chairperson during the 1970s. She was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce in 1975 in recognition of her good works on behalf of her community.
Evelyn loved Central Michigan University to which her husband gave so much. She became a huge supporter of the Biological Station on Beaver Island where she maintained a summer home. She served as the Secretary to former Presidents, Judson Foust and Charles Anspach.
Evelyn had a dog practically her entire life (and one cat). She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and spending time with her friends and family. Many who knew her were touched by her gentleness, understanding, friendship, and keen sense of humor.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Sue Evelyn Woods of Marysville, and son Ken (Stephanie) Bovee of Mt. Pleasant as well as her grandchildren, John (Mary) Woods of Ortonville, Melinda Wiegand of Marysville, Dan (Jackie) Bovee of Wheaton, IL, and Jessica (Erik) Bredberg of Mt. Pleasant; and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Elsie Gagnon, and her husband Norvall.
