Gary was born on December 2, 1942 in Mt. Pleasant; son of Marvel (Warner) and Eugene Knight. He was a member of the MPHS class of 1961, and attended college at Ferris and Central Michigan University for four years before going into business full time with his father at American Cleaners. The cleaners diversified over the years, adding another branch in St. Johns and a laundry mat and uniform rental service in Mt. Pleasant. When Gary sold the business in 2007, he became a consultant to drycleaners around the country. He was active in the industry for over 50 years, serving on the Michigan Institute of Dry Cleaning Board two times. At their annual conference this past summer, the Michigan Institute of Laundry and Dry cleaning presented Gary with the Mike O'Neil Award - an award presented only every four or five years and that recognizes, "the spirit and steadfast devotion of individuals who have provided immeasurable support and contributions to the dry cleaning industry as well as leadership and involvement in various community endeavors.
Gary was generous in so many ways, including service to his community. Over the years, he was a member of the following boards: Mt. Pleasant Planning Commission, Deerfield Township Planning Commission, Middle Michigan Development Corporation, Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, Mid-Michigan Industries, Co-Expo, Airport Advisory, and the Mt. Pleasant City Commission where he was twice elected as Mayor. Gary is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and has also served on that Council as a member and president.
Gary's hobbies were unique in that each was shared with a family member-hunting with his sons-in-law and grandsons, gardening with his mother-in-law, years of showing horses with his father-in-law and his daughter Dana, traveling to many Spanish-speaking countries with Sue, dry cleaning (and he truly enjoyed it) with his father, his brother and later his daughter Kara. He loved being with family and friends, be it at his home on the river, the barn, or at his hunting cabin. Gary had so many dear and faithful friends whom he enjoyed and was thankful for all of his life.
Gary is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue; 2 daughters, Dana (Howard) Brophy of Bloomfield Hills and Kara (Dan) Watters of Mt. Pleasant; 5 grandchildren, Asher, Claire, Megan, Lawson and Mallory; a sister, Kay Wantland (Richard); brother, Denny (Linda); sister-in-law Linda Gray; brother-in-law, Tom (Mary) Krapohl; nieces and nephew; and step-mother, Lorraine Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Harold and Marie Krapohl. He is also survived by many other relatives and dear friends who have supported him in so many ways over the past five years.
In lieu of flowers, Gary requested that memorials be made to University of Michigan Cancer Center Development Office, Sarcoma Research Fund or to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
