Gertrude Bates Owens, age 83, of Elwell, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Schnepp Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center in St. Louis, Michigan. She was born on October 12, 1929, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Joseph B. and Dorotha (Doane) Cross. She was raised in the Battle Creek area and graduated from the Battle Creek High School in 1947. She furthered her education by attending Kellogg Community College and obtaining her Bachelors Degree in 1970.
On May 14, 1977, Gertrude married Jesse L. Owens, in Battle Creek, Michigan. Gertrude was employed as an X-Ray Technician with Battle Creek Health Systems for 35 years. She is a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Vestaburg. Gertrude enjoyed knitting, gardening and door to door ministering.
Gertrude is survived by her husband, Jesse; her loving children, Stephanie Peoples of Battle Creek and Michelle (Walter) Roberson of Battle Creek; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; siblings, Joseph (Bertha) Barton Cross of Blanchard, Patricia A. Smith of Battle Creek, Charles H. (Marsha) Cross of Holt, Thomas J. (Vonnie) Cross of Blanchard, David D. (Beverly) Cross of Blanchard, and Linda K. Darnell of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Dorotha; sister, Carol; grandson, Larry Jr.; and first husband, Floyd D. Bates.
A Memorial Service in Gertrude's honor will be held at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 7963 N. Caris Road, Vestaburg, Michigan on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Thomas Cross officiating.
Memorial contributions in Gertrude's name may be made payable to The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Vestaburg, Michigan.
