Leonard D. "Rocky" Rockafellow Obituary
Aug. 8, 1928-Oct. 14, 2012

Leonard D. (Rocky) Rockafellow, age 84, of Elm Hall passed away in the early hours of October 14, 2012 after a very courageous 3 year battle with leukemia.
Leonard was born August 8, 1928 in Elm Hall, the third child of Glenn and Phyllis (Story) Rockafellow. On January 16, 1954 he married Wilma Lator from Ashley. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2002, after nearly 50 years of marriage. Leonard graduated from Riverdale High School in 1946. He joined the U.S. Navy on September 1, 1948 and spent 4 years assigned to the Destroyer, U.S.S. English. Leonard was very proud of his military service and was on the English during the evacuation of Hungnam Korea in 1950. They were the last ship out of Korea for this evacuation. He was honorably discharged on August 29, 1952. Leonard retired from Consumers Power Company in 1987 after 41 years of service. He regularly attended the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church in Riverdale, and was a life member of the Alma VFW. Leonard was also an avid deer hunter, fisherman, and gardener, and was active in the Elm Hal - Riverdale area Little League for many years as a coach for each of his son's teams.
He is survived by his four sons and their families, Brian (Debbie) Rockafellow of Riverdale, Blane (Lori) Rockafellow of Raleigh NC, Kevin (Michele) Rockafellow of Westland, and Joel (Patty) Rockafellow of Mt. Pleasant; and his grandchildren, Brent (Stacey) Rockafellow of Holland, Michelle (Cameron) Keller of Winona MN, Andrew and Nick Rockafellow of Raleigh, NC, Emily and Jillian Rockafellow of Westland, and Nick Horanoff of Mt. Pleasant, and was also blessed with four great grandchildren, Meagan, Brandon, Marin, and Kyle. He is also survived by his sister, Alma (Max) Root of Elm Hall; a brother, Reuel (Lil) Rockafellow of Grand Ledge; a brother- in-law, Otto (Joyce) Later; sisters-in-law, Reatha and Ruth Lator; special friend, Elnora Hacker; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Michelle; his parents; a sister, Ruth Hunt; and several brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church in Riverdale at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Dr. Jana Lynn Almeida officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, October 19, 2012 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church or the Leukemia Society. Leonard will be remembered for his quick wit, his love of family and friends, and the work ethic he and Wilma passed on to their family.
